Sunburn:Son't believe everything you hear

About the mom and the sunburned kids. As I said yesterday - it was a bunch of baloney. Collasped lungs ? Second degree burns ? Some of you people don't live in a area where sunburn is common. It would take a lot of time fully exposed to do that kind of damage even to a child. It does happen. A woman from the UK was rushed home from Tenerife recently with second degree burns, having been in the sun just a couple of hours without protection. Anybody who goes out into harsh sun without protection is just asking for it. "Oh, I want a nice healthy tan to show off when I get home". Bah! Tans are not healthy at all, they are the body's defence mechanism against the sun. IMHO, the mother was definately in the wrong, but jail is a bit far.

She was in jail for 8 days already? I think that is more than sufficient punishment for her neglect (especially since the burns only turned out to be first degree burns). I still think it was stupid for her to have had her kids (at such a young age) without sun screen in conditions like that. It was probably a good thing that the deputy acted to get those kids out of the sun before some real damage was done, but I think the mother has learned her lesson (After all she "ain't never been in jail"). Oh boy I am gonna get it for this, but this one line sums it up perfectly: "I ain't never been in jail," she said. Some people just weren't meant to have children. Sunburnt or not. Now moving away from the more controversial "everyone should be neutered at birth" viewpoint... As to being baloney (damn I love that word!) as Simon said it is not always the case. I can get very seriously burnt if I go out in the midday sun for as little as a few hours without protection - and this is in the UK with its sub 20 degree temperatures. I would expect to be in casualty by the end of the day if I was hiking naked across Dartmoor (with enough water and food)... and not because of the gorse bushes! :omg:

Well, the story from the police is total BS. The paramedic on scene said it wasn't serious and the kid didn't need to go to the hospital. It should have ended there. Mad dogs and English men. The English are at heart wimps when it comes to hot weather. Look at all the old movies. they have more yards of cloth wrapped around their head than it takes to hang curtains in Windsor Castle. Not to mention those wimpy looking pith hats that they all wear if they are anywhere near the tropics along with the shorts and sandals and button down shirts with club ties- quite the proper looking jungle outfit.( note that while all around them are suffereing from the heat that they not only DO NOT SWEAT their clothes also remain crisp and pressed ) Sunburn is too good for them. As to sunburn in England itself - one would really have to strive to attain a decent tan - let along a burn - in what they call "Summer weather" :) Richard Between believing a thing and thinking you know is only a small step and quickly taken. These kids were really young (too young to get out of the sun themselves). If she couldn't afford sun screen she shouldn't have kept them in the sun so long. That said, I think she has already been punished beyond what is reasonable. I think something like this should have at most warranted a $50 fine. Well that may have been an overreaction on the part of the local authorities, however... Dude, I live in Maine. Not the hottest of places and I've had second degree burns from just a few hours out in the July sun. There's not much that sucks as much as having blisters on your forehead, face, neck, shoulders, and upper arms. X| Of course that had nothing to do with the half gallon of Jack my buddy and I were drinking like water... :~ Josh Knox that-guy.net

Ryan Johnston wrote: It isn't against the law to be stupid, but it is to endanger your child Not to belabor a point ( HA! ) but who is to determine what is endangering a child ? I can give you cases that are a lot more significant than a sunburn. If someone is stopped for speeding and there is a child in the vehicle is that child endangerment ? A lot more people are killed by car accidents than sunburn. If I am teaching my child how to ride a bike and he gets hurt is that child endangerment ? Placing the onus elsewhere if a cop is in high speed pursuit ( something they should NEVER do but always do ) and hits a car with a child aboard is that child endangerment ? Life does not come with a guarantee of safety and such cannot nor should not be legislated. One can almost always demonstrate a degree of child endangerment from any everyday activity . Unless the ommision is severe and flagrant such as giving a toddler a loaded gun or knife or throwing them in the water to teach them to swim or telling them to go play in the street I believe that law enforcement should keep the hell out of our everyday mundane existance. Being a severe redhead he got burns and was carried back shortly afterward theny pyshio had to sort out the mobility problems caused by the samaged skin. Oh, and he got drunk before falling asleep face down in the spanish sun. Sunds like a Drawin award candidate ! Elaint (pale fluffy tigress emoticon) Would you like to meet my teddy bear ?

That wasn't quite what I meant, you have to think further back to the bigger discussion on the matter (I think it was about 6 months back, probably started by Paul as all good topics are ;P). As to the rest, yes I do burn easily (though I managed to tan during my week in the sun a month and a bit ago, which is definately a first for me). But as you yourself pointed out, I am talking about me here - I was making no reference to "these kids". I was talking to Richard, not commenting on the topic.

I'm from next door in "balmy" New Brunswick, and have had many sunburns (from being out in the field with the army) year round, not just summer. Yeah, I'm just THAT stupid I keep forgetting sunscreen when it's +5  It also appears to me that "child endangerment" now includes bringing your kids to a shopping mall parking lot, evidenced by last week's kidnapping. What's a mother have to do, pack 'em back in the womb while she's shopping? Sheesh:confused:

Shog9 wrote: Hmm, neither memory nor Lounge involvement stretch back that far. But it sounds an ugly can 'o worms, so i'll let it be... It wasn't that bad, it was more along the lines of having all children neutered at birth using a temporary method (i.e. can be reversed if they ever want to have children). Easily the vast majority of babies are not planed, so this would not only help the 'parents' but also cut down on the number of children who should not be here (ones that are not wanted and are never loved completely) who usually end up entering into society from the wrong end and with a twisted perspective. Win-win for everyone. Shog9 wrote: Fair 'nuff !! David is being pathetic pedantic alert !! The ' in 'nuff is indicating a missing character, the 'e', so do you spell enough enuff?
