Photography side-business

Seems this forum has its standards laid down from day one. :omg:

I use ListBoxes for line-oriented text output (not TextBoxes), and PictureBoxes for pictures (not drawings).
Well, I could talk about my wife's experience running a photography business, or about my career as a professional hitman. Your choice.

Maybe your wife could enlighten us about your career hits and provide some artists impressions while doing so. You do know this forum if any will definitely need a way to show pictures, graphics, and charts, pie or otherwise. :)

Actually neither; I used Minolta for my 35mm and now I am looking at investing in the Cannon D-60. For medium format I use a 4.5 x 6 Bronica w/view finder and speed grip. An extra film load box is also handy for medium format.
Ah okay. I didn't even know that Canon has a D60 too (Nikon has one). I have a Nikon D80 as well as a D40X. My lens collection is kinda non-existent right now, I just have the 18-55 kit lens from the 40X and I also own a 50mm 1.8 prime. My next purchase will be an external flash, and after that I may also purchase a fast 17-50 F/2.8 Tamron lens. Until I get the flash and the fast Tamron, I don't dare to even attempt to assist someone. But once I get some practice and get better at taking pics, I'd like to be a 2nd shooter at a wedding or some social event.

Are there any developers here who do professional photography during weekends? If so do you mind sharing your thoughts on how you go about doing this. Some interesting bits would be how people perceive you as a photographer (considering you are a programmer in your day job). Whether you enjoy the weekends more than you enjoy writing code. Whether the extra income ever gets large enough to not only cover the costs of expensive SLR lenses and flash equipment, but also add to your savings. Thanks.

My latest book : C++/CLI in Action / Amazon.com linkI have a PM who is starting to do this on the side. He's got into the hardware as a hobby and gone from there, last week he did his first wedding and I think he found it a challenge. Having said that his real passion is photoshopping to get some really dramatic end results. He's been at it for 2 years!

Not surprised at the Photoshop part of it. I've been browsing wedding website portfolios for some time now and the vast majority of pics are severely post-processed to look good.

My latest book : C++/CLI in Action / Amazon.com linkHe takes great pleasure in trotting out his latest works, I look at them but it is a passion I don't share. I have suggested he go for the more subtle enhancing but I may be doing him a disservice. To me a photo is a memory, to him it's a peice of artwork, different perspectives!

I used to be a wedding photog while in college for CS. I got out of it because it was just draining; school, work, plus that. If you are just starting you aren't going to make a lot of money; you have to invest in a lot of equipment plus you need to build a portfolio which means doing some stuff at cost or even lose money to get a good start. After a couple years I was in high demand; I often did Friday and Saturday weddings back to back. It was good money at that point, but I had no life from May to September, so now I only take pics for myself!
