    The feature would be a thousand times as useful if it also had a "close file handle forcefully" button.

      Yes. Actually, I was thinking it would be nice if it also had an "Open a copy of the file as read only."

        What's new about this? I get exactly the same message (well, minus the "Send feedback" link) in Vista. "Your File Is In Use… Demystified"[^]

        In other words, it's reliant on applications telling Windows what files they have open. Probably the only change here is that all the in-box applications have been modified to do this.
