New laptop...
-
I'm beginning to think about getting a new laptop to replace my current laptop... I want to be able to move it around easily so, 15.4" would seem to be the right kind of size. However, when I'm at home I don't want to be squinting at such an aburdly small screen. I'd like to dock it and then have a dual monitor configuration - and I don't mean that the laptop screen becomes one of the monitors (it's too small already. The size is only for ease of luggability) I also want it developer spec' so lots of memory and processing power. A good battery life is useful also - I'm willing to give up some performance if it keeps my machine running longer on batteries. Does such a beast exist?

I too am impressed with Lenovo. We use the Dell Precision mobile workstations at work. A little pricey, but they are real workstations, lots of capability in a decent size. You can use dual monitors with or without (I think) the docking station. I'm pretty impressed with the one I use. :)

I think you would be very happy with something like this: http://www.notebookreview.com/default.asp?newsID=4565[^] I've always been very satisfied with Lenovo (IBM) Laptops. Phil
I won’t not use no double negatives.
I've actually just seen a Dell I quite like. However, the website keeps breaking when I try and configure it. At least it isn't as bad as the HP website. It's full of marketing pish and if I want to see the kind of information I'm interested in I have to look at their business machines (so I have to add VAT on myself becuase B2B transactions are quoted without VAT becuase it can be claimed back) and then if I try to configure it it gives me the configuration options in US dollars, despite the fact it was giving me the base system in Pounds Sterling. Also a seeminly same spec business machine Vs. home machines are marketly different in price. I got irritated and left!

Unfortunately, now you've shown me the price of that and I look the same model up on the UK site I find that we're being ripped off again. Actually, the exact same model doesn't exist, but the two closest to the spec cost somewhere around $1695 and $2031 (when converted to US dollars at today's exchange rate) - Compared with $959 that your link quotes! Hmmm... I'm thinking I will go to that conference in Seattle in March after all! The savings by buying it in the US will pretty much cover my flight and most of my hotel stay.

I have to say that my work laptop has a tiny screen. Yeah, it's uber-light, but hard to read anything in a standard resolution size. I don't think any laptop gives you the best of all worlds.

Score one for Apple in that respect - at todays exchange rates, Macbooks and Macbook Pros are coming in cheaper in the UK than in the US. Of course, if/when the pound strengthens against the dollar, that'll change, but it's nice to see prices that close.

The Dell D series docks will let you do that (1x digital, 1x analog), I assume the E series does as well. The D's are in the process of being phased out so I wouldn't buy a D dock now unless you can get it really cheap.
