Windows XP & Java Virtual Machine (Saga continues)
-
For those not aware of this sorry tale: On July 10th Microsoft withdrew the Java Virtual Machine for XP users from Windows update. This was because of their ongoing dispute with Sun. Microsoft promised to make the VM available again in Service Pack 1, the media version only and not the downloadable version  Unfortunately this action meant if like me you used XP as a development platform with Visual Studio 6 you were stuffed if you had reinstalled XP & VS after July 10th - VS wanted a Virtual machine and installs an early incompatible version  Fortunately I've just discovered that someone in Microsoft has extracted his head from his ar*e and seen sense:omg: They have now said that the VM will be available in downloadable versions of SP1 Click here for info[^]:) Even better, they have also made the VM available for download now![^] for those like me who have been grinding their teeth for the last few weeks :-D Thank you Microsoft:omg: for finally getting your act together. Its just a pity you lacked the intelligence to avoid this mess in the first place. Now all I have to do is reinstall XP as my development platform..grrr....:(( JohnJ :zzz:Sleep(28800000);:zzz: http://www.rainbow-innov.co.uk[^]

Preferred storyline: - I am your father. Search your feelings and you'll know it's the truth. Together we can rule this galaxy like father and son. - Ok dad. Let's kick some butt!

Nope, sorry, been there, tried that ;P The Sun Java version works fine with IE6 (mostly) but VS6 doesn't recognize it, instead it installs its own outdated version if it doesn't find the official Microsoft version. The result then is you are rapidly up sh*t creek without a paddle reinstalling XP again  I ended up going back to Windows 2000 until Microsoft woke up & made a Microsoft version of the VM for XP available again. :-D JohnJ :zzz:Sleep(28800000);:zzz: http://www.rainbow-innov.co.uk[^]

They have a free community edition which manage pretty much everything except J2EE stuff. It's a bit tough on memory and CPU requirements, but besides that I think it's a nice IDE. It does the job and does it well. VJ++ is an entire lake of shit compared to Sun ONE Studio :) JohnJ wrote: I ended up going back to Windows 2000 until Microsoft woke up & made a Microsoft version of the VM for XP available again. Thanks for the tip, at the moment though all I want is the current Microsoft VM that works with XP - otherwise VS6 won't install correctly. :(( Anyway I've downloaded the installer from Microsoft so I'll know when I reinstall everything at the weekend if my problems are solved or if Microsoft have been telling untruths again :~ JohnJ :zzz:Sleep(28800000);:zzz: http://www.rainbow-innov.co.uk[^]
