Is it just me or do they seem contradictorary to each other, like no wonder I'm confused about I have a future in software. :P Cheers, Alex

Not exactly. It seems to me that both are true. Under the whole GPL system, which is what you have most of the time for these kinds of companies, these companies are not "software" companies, they're consulting firms. So selling the consulting is going great, so long as they can under cut their competition. However from a standpoint of actually trying to sell software they suck, because they don't/won't/can't make money at that. Pure OSS as your only business model is stupid and bound to fail in the long run.
