In an office where their are top performers telling jokes and personal use of computers does not often come up as an issue. Top performers know when it is ok and can use something called common sense to evaluate their usage. I don't think a top performer would ever forward an email joke to the staff but yes I would reprimand them the same for such tactless behavior. Are you telling a series of loud jokes in a cube farm keeping everyone from working or are you telling the joke at the water cooler? Is the joke being told to the entire team to blow off some steam or is the joke just away to kill Friday afternoon because no one wants to work. For every scenario you say I would be a buzz kill I think you will find a sharp difference between top performers and average performers who just so happen to be placed in a below average peer group. Absolutely, humor is appropriate in the work place. A top performer, however, always knows that work comes first.

I have a feeling the best performer's you'll ever get are really only average. I am a top performer and if you stop me from being who I am, I am no longer a top perfomer. I know that if I feel opressed, i.e. can't e-mail jokes, can't laugh, can't have fun, my performance goes down really quick. I've been on the opressive programs and the top performers get away from them as quickly as they can, leaving the average performers. This makes the higher average performers the Top performers. My 2 cents

I think what I am not elaborating is there is a slight difference in the treatment of top performers and the rest. The problem is you have to make the rules for the masses and then hypocritically enforce them differently to those to whom they do not apply. Of course, I would still reprimand anyone for an email forward. Those are just plan retarded.

I would suspend any person forwarding emails, jokes, or other items that are not work related. People show no common sense when it comes to computers. Look at some of the tacky emails you get from outlook users who think a pink background with cursive font is somehow professional.
