They will probably be too long.... One example: the OLE DB provider for Oracle leaks memory when you do a select. So we have two options - don't do selects (:)), or get a new version. The latest version does not fix the problem ( although they claimed it would when we put in a TAR ), BUT it was 125 MEG to download, because EVERY Oracle component includes a version of their install tool. BUT the version was newer than the version used to install Oracle before, so having installed it, I could no longer RUN any other part of Oracle, I could not uninstall any other part of Oracle, I could not reinstall any other part of Oracle. It took me a DAY to totally evict Oracle from my PC and get it to work again. I also found that if you bring up the uninstaller and ask it to remove one component, it instead removes EVERYTHING, even the JVM, from your computer. If I wrote code half as bad as this, I would be on my ear, and rightly so. Christian Hey, at least Logo had, at it's inception, a mechanical turtle. VB has always lacked even that... - Shog9 04-09-2002 Cats, and most other animals apart from mad cows can write fully functional vb code. - Simon Walton - 6-Aug-2002

So you consider the things I've detailed about the way Oracle behaves to be acceptable ? No wonder you're a VB programmer. I guess you think a GUI that literally takes 20 seconds to bring up a popup window is also OK ? Oracle blows. The DB may be good, the developer tools most certainly are not. how much have you use Oracle, BTW ? Christian Hey, at least Logo had, at it's inception, a mechanical turtle. If I may note a couple of things. 1. They do not offend VB programmers, they offend you. The way I live my life does not include trying to please all the people, all the time. 2. I didn't say any of them, I am merely quoting them, as are others around here. 3. I would hope that any VB programmer who finds their way here may take note from the many threads, sigs and general comments around the place and investigate why it is that so many people look down on VB. Your quote from Bjarne is right, you can make a right mess of things with C++. You can't with VB, because the power to do so is not there. Stroustrup also says no language feature should be judged on how it can be used badly, but on how useful it will be if used properly. Both C# and VB miss this point, by assuming the user is an idiot, they keep him one, and if he isn't, make it apparent they will need to fight the language to do anything remotely interesting or outside the norm. Most languages I have used are designed for a purpose and good at that purpose. The purpose of VB is to be easy to learn and to protect people from powerful features that they are not smart enough to handle. I accept that it does this well, but that does not mean that I consider those design criteria to be a good basis for a language I would want to use.
