    I was at school with two Dave brothers, they were from Gujarat (please excuse spelling, it was a long time ago) and I understood from them that it is a fairly common name in that region.

    Yes, I am also from Gujarat. And "Dave" is a last name in India.

      Yes, I knew that. Having two brothers, both with first name of Dave would be a bit confusing. :) You might have been confused by my using 'common name'. What I meant was that I understood that there were many Dave families in Gujarat, in the same way that there are many families in the Yorkshire region of the UK, whose family name ends with "thwaite", such as "Braithwaite" or "Clatterthwaite".
