Oracle buys Sun

Well in fairness IBM uses a lot of Java too. I think it is more important to Oracle that it now owns MySQL, one of its biggest competitors. God knows what they are going to do to MySQL now though.

It will be free and completely stripped down, probably rebadged as Oracle 'Lite', then maybe they'll over more versions of Oracle increasing price and features.

That would make sense only if they replaced the existing (jokes of) MySQL db engines with Oracle's one.

Interesting! I was wondering if IBM or Oracle would buy them. I even wondered in the back of my mind whether Microsoft would consider buying Sun.

now that Oracle 10g express and M$SQL Express are free, why'd you need MySQL? MySQL ... function and triggers cannot be recursive temp table cannot be referenced more than once in same query open more than one conn per transaction is not permitted (distrib trans..) ... I thought MySQL is nice in beginning but now thinks its fading away

i had problem with it recently discovered it didn't like transaction scope (doc says it does) failed with some "internal error" trying to access memory it isn't supposed to. oracle engineer recommended me to use ODAC BETA version and yet even this version didn't work in the end i resort to go old oConn.BeginTransaction and oTx.Commit/Rollback

You can look at what they are doing with/to Berkeley DB to get a taste of what might be in store for MySQL. Oracle Berkely DB Product Family[^].

I am not so sure that I think this is a great idea. I think at first glance people will try to gravitate to what looks like the natural synergy of Oracle (a company heavily leveraged in Java) and SUN (a company that is also obviously heavily involved in Java) but there is a larger component here, the hardware parts, where I think Oracle may have issues. To me this is a clear case of a company getting outside their comfort zone. It can go very well or it can end poorly. I have seen it go both ways, and have been involved in at least one of them (Intel's move into the communications space). Look around and see if you can find any others in the market.. I bet you can. I understand the theory behind synergy and linked product diversification, and it is really hard to look forward in this industry and try to see all the possible outcomes just because the variables are so many, but I just get a bad feeling about this move. I also ask if people would think it was a good idea for Microsoft to buy a hardware company? Do you think that would be successful (keep any anti-ms bias out of it for now).

Best mice and keyboards I ever used were from Microsoft... And who makes the XBox? That works pretty well. Maybe a Microsoft Windows and Microsoft PC strategy could work. Simplify things (price would go up though.) But yeah. I don't see it going well for Sun and Oracle. It is better than IBM + Sun but that isn't saying much.
