You think people are choosing to die, out of what ? Laziness ?

It is called Darwinism or survival of the fittest. It is natural evolution. If they want it to live bad enough they will do what is needed to survive. Do you think American colonists needed welfare? No, look at what we have become and now we are just going to throw it all away. Just because I have empathy that doesn't mean I want to ease people's pain so I don't feel theirs. I want them to be able to do it themselves.

No, most of them died. And that was with the advantage of the locals being killed by the diseases they brought.

I'm not sure how you're throwing it away, or what this has to do with what we're talking about.

Do you have any meaningful comments to make on this, or just swearing ? b/c all you're doing is showing how stupid you are, regardless of which side of the debate people sit on. Do you believe that hinger exists in the world at all ? Do you accept the possibility that drought is something that can be measured, and that kills people. Global warming or not, there's a lot of drought about, and a lot of people dying.

I believe that drought can be measured and it does bring hunger and death. It has done so all throughout history. I also think that climate change can govern the frequency and severity of drought, history bears that out as well. I am just not convinced that climate change is anthropogenic in nature, at least not to the degree that the contribution could even be measured.

I note you still can't engage in conversation, where you answer the questions I ask you. Have you considered that some people just prefer Obama's policies, that they actually make sense to them ? Or just that moron like Bush would turn people completely against anyone who is in the same party ?

I tend to agree. That's not the point I was trying to make. The point was that regardless of the reasons, the earth IS getting warmer, there IS drought, and people are dying. CSS did not disappoint in showing he had no knowledge of this, at least not on any meaningful level. He'd already told me in another thread that I have zero empathy ( amongst other things ), so I set out mostly to explore his levels of empathy....

I am not sure of the distinction you're making, but I do know that I've learned to try to understand how people feel based on their situation, rather than doing what CSS did above and saying 'well, if they are hungry, they must be too lazy to grow food', etc.

I googled the wiki for sympathy and found this: Although empathy and sympathy are often used interchangeably, a subtle variation in ordinary usage can be detected. To empathize is to respond to another's perceived emotional state by experiencing feelings of a similar sort. Sympathy not only includes empathizing (but not always), but also entails having a positive regard or a non-fleeting concern for the other person. I can express my understanding and concern for someone elses suffering (sympathy) without actually suffering with them (empathy). Maybe I am being pedantic...wouldn't be the first time. :)

OK, I did a google define, and I got the definition I would use. Which is, to put oneself in someone elses shoes in order to understand their situation. But, perhaps your definition is more correct, I don't know.

I don't know either...I think that common usage tends to morph the definition of words over time. Our conversation brought to mind a Star Trek episode. I don't know if you ever watched Star Trek TOS. One of the episodes was called The Empath[^]. There was a woman who healed people by transferring their pain and suffering onto herself.

I have watched some TOS, but I don't recall that one. Sounds interesting tho. And yes, English is a living language, the meaning of words does change over time.
