Reagan is the ideal from my perspective. A civilian hero. Reasons: essentially a conservative but most importantly he spoke directly to the people with honesty and integrity. Bush #1 not so much, but I couldn't explain why.

He wasn't the communicator that Reagan was, maybe? On the other hand, as a war president he was superb. His orchestrating of the buildup to the first Gulf war was nothing short of brilliant.

Which is unfortunate and has always bothered me. The modern political spectrum (left to right)exists for one purpose - collectivist fear mongering. The further you get away from them (on the spectrum they created, of course) the closer you get to Hitler. Anyone they don't like finds themselves standing in a big box labeled 'Right Wing Extremist' along side a wax statue of Hitler. Libertarians do the same thing, of course, but for slightly different reasons. Anyone who disagres with Oakman or Craig or Grhame, for example, that perhaps social decorum should be allowed to restrict people from having orgies in the public park is enough to get you put into their 'sharia law' box along side a wax statue of bin Ladin. American conservatives exist no where on any such spectrum. The only true political spectrum is between absolute centralized control of a society and absolute anarchy. Liberals want to force everyone to live on the control side, while libertarians want to force everyone to live towards the side of anarchy. American Conservatives simply believe that social control should be distributed among the states and the people, as it was originally intended by our founders, in order to maximize the opportunity the average person has to define the point on that spectrum they are personnaly most comfortable with.
Chaining ourselves to the moral high ground does not make us good guys. Aside from making us easy targets, it merely makes us idiotic prisoners of our own self loathing.
