Users often give me incredibly simple solutions to what to me is a very complex problem. Type a string in the 'name' combo, three other combos must filter on that name, or part of name. Now, phone no, only has items for that name, but they user might want to now drive the search from phone number, so it must contain all numbers again. All sorts of verbosely tooltipped devices dominated my waking and sleeping thoughts, until the user suggested an extra entry in the combos that says 'show all'. The user doesn't care that 'show all' isn't a phone number, but they do care that they don't have to leave the phone numbers (i.e. leave the single list), to change it.
