I have no tact so I have been told. I recently tried to implement tact. For that last Eight years I have been working on C#; prior to Thirteen years of Java. I head hunder recently sent me the following communicaion:
From: Head Hunter Subject: Java Lead To: TheArch Company X has been engaged by a client to locate a Lead Java Architect. This is a full time position located yaddie, yaddie... Position will Architect/Lead/Develop software for yaddie, yaddie... Position will own, manage, architect and develop back end applications for yaddie, yaddie, replacement. Work closely with internal groups to include: yaddie, yaddie... Interface, yaddie, yaddie... Database, yaddie, yaddie... Math, and yaddie, yaddie... Data; to ensure all systems are able to communicate, process and flow smoothly. Lead Java experience is required. If you or someone you know may be interested, email a resume. Please include salary requirements.
My idea of a tactful reply:
From: TheArch Subject: Re: Java Lead To: The Head Hunter I have not worked on Java for some time now. I have been doing much C# .NET (WPF) for a while now. If they would consider using c# .net on the back end I beleive I would be a good candidate. I use DSL's for my architecture development. I could do a Java backend no problem, but I would need about two weeks on the job to get back up to speed. Mostly studying the new Java Language Specification. I am fluent up to Java 2. I would also like to use Visual Studio 2008 Professional or Team to design a nice architecture, DSL's can output code in any language. I own VS 2008 Pro, so that should not be a problem. Best Regards, TheArch
I have not even though about doing Java for Six years, and refused many really tempting offers. I thought I would graciously offer my services and expertise. Is this tact? I thought it was. Perhaps not. Infureating Reply from Head Hunter:
From: The Headhunter Subject: Re: Java Lead To: TheArch Thank you for your interest in the Java Lead position. Unfortunately, this position requires someone with strong Java experience as this person would be the only key Java Developer. The development team is small w

Of course that's how the recruiter would reply. I'm confused. What are you looking for here? Agreement? The reason why your "tact" was ineffective? Is this a form of humour? hmm must be. gotta say it's a bit too dry for me.

I tought it might be logical to conclude that I am an awesome Java developer and would be a great asset to the team, as I bring a wide range of skills and talent to the team. Not only can I write Java like a pro, I can write C# DSL's to write Java like a pro. The artifact DSL is a huge value added asset as it allows the company to retool to any platform with out scrificing the code base. I told the recruiter straight out I am the guy for the job, and I was willing to do Java even know I really don't want to (implied). Heck if the recruiter would have given me an opportunity to talk to the client I could have championed C# .net for the backend. At this point in the refactoring process the decision to use Java to replace yaddie, yaddie should be challanged. Espically if the candidate is a domain expert on all technologies involved. 'I am simply looking for someone to commiserate with...' :sigh:

Please excuse my earlier insolence. Your logic was too awesome for me. I see the truth now.
And don't forget his modesty and humility?
