Why there is so few female programmers?

There are several fields where women are unrepresented for no apparent reason; the two that pop into mind are motorcycle and automobile racing. Believe it or not, I think there's a parallel. In motor racing, most drivers were heavily involved as kids--it's more than Dads (and Moms) pushing it, they become car nerds, er, nuts. And then there's the competitive, generally without grudges, angle Likewise, most the programmers I know are techno-geeks, or were for the first ten years in the business. Even when they get burned out, they still pay attention to the dry news report that company x increased processor speed by so much (like the car geeks ears perk up when a company gets 5 more horse power out of an engine.) My point is, that relatively few women are techno-geeks or car nuts for that matter, as teenagers and I think that shapes choices when going into college. (My teenage daughter keeps pictures of high end cars which is considered odd by all her girl friends, but not her guy friends.)

Too true! I will say this tho (as a woman programmer) - I totally dig working in an otherwise all male IT dept. None of the bitchy crap that the receptionist types go in for, and at work I'm just one of the guys. At home, I get the luxury of being a married woman. Honestly Lauren, I worked for a long time in a place where the programmers were roughly mixed and I think as a general statement you are bang on the mark there, to the point where I'd say most women are useless coders and most men are useless organisers.
