It's an old (probably obsolete) term from the days of Visual Display Terminals. It means "should not be shown on the screen as they are typed". About one scroll down for definition[^]

By the way that definition is worded, I would guess that this is more of a security issue. "Of course this is a security issue" you say? Well, it is more of a security issue than you are probably thinking... Are you aware that old CRT monitors can be read using electronics from up to about 50ft away....even from another room? The signal that displays the characters on a screen don't stop moving as soon as you see it. As a result, echoing what someone types back to the screen is potentially sharing that password with anyone that has the right equipment setup to sniff it out.

It's not just CRTs although the signals used to control the electron beam in them were much larger. Your DVI cable leaks RF as well. Well, the "-plex" suffix means to have multiple parts. So I would guess it means to not echo something to more than one spot.
