How is the current IT market in US and around the world. I know its not that good. Any forecast about the recovery? How .NET is doing in the current market? Best Regards Venkatraman Kalyanam Chennai - India "Being Excellent is not a skill, it is an attitude"

Shitty. I am part time in Switzerland and thought I could spend the rest of my time in Munich ( Why am I complicating? Because I love Munich most in the world as I spend some of my nicest students' years there with parties and blondes and everything...;-), but, in general, Germany's extremely bad place to live 8-) ). It's unbeliveable. There are absolutely no freelance and part time jobs in Munich anymore, even for sr. architects & engineers with lots of experience. Everything's full time now. And locals only. It is bad. Tomaz Tomaz Stih, B.Sc.SE

In the UK it's pretty harsh at the moment. As a developer, I've always thought that finding a job seems to be easier for the tech support type guys. However, I have another South African friend, who on seeing me find a job in the UK within a month, decided to follow me over. Being in the network admin / tech support field, it seemed he would not have too much of a problem. He's currently working on the wax line of a cheese factory in Somerset... X| Fortunately, being of the adventurous type, he is having a ball, but should his personality have been different, it could have been disastrous. The following statement about your geekness is true.

I guess I'm a lucky one. I interviewed for my current position pre 9/11/02 (e.g. before the gov't went psycho), then ka-bam, planes crashed; but I still got hired. :-) but the gov't is still psycho. evilpen dot net::msn messenger:negacao@hotmail.com

it is very bad in the US, compared to what it was a few years ago. the only jobs i see in my area are for people with very specialized skills; the market for a general-purpose C++ Windows programmer is gone. i've never seen a job where .Net is a requirement, though some mention it as a "preferred". IMO, since so many programming jobs are going overseas, the market is probably better in India these days. -c

Not too well. I've been mostly unemployed for the last year, doing odd jobs to get by. I used to think I'd never be one of those people that couldn't find a job in his field, but I've been proven wrong. The problem seems to be that many companies are choosing to delay or cancel internal software development. This has caused a huge flood of programmers into other areas as well. The trick, or so I believe, is to be the best salesperson these days, since you're competing with dozens or even hundreds of other developers for the same positions. It really doesn't matter if you're better than the other candidates, it's how well you shmooze. -- Where are we going? And why am I in this handbasket?

Pretty depressing right now. I'm in the North Florida area. It's gotten better in the past 6 months or so but it's not that great. Very few jobs out there. What I am finding more of is junior (read: low-paying) positions with an incredibly long list of required skills. I've got a friend who has been out of work for over a year, another friend who just lost her job. My company cut our development staff in half earlier this year. I've been waiting for the market to get better. Figure it's gotta bounce back eventually, right? :~
