It seems to be a persistent problem with techy people that the underlying data matters more than the UI. I'm sure their data are accurate enough to drive an really cool high res openGL model but someone somewhere in the depths of CERN probably vetoed the expense of paying someone to make the data look really futuristic. The techies probably even believe that such graphics would detract from the science they are performing.
