So, once again BA is being brought to its knees by Union action. Personally, I don't understand why unions even exist. If you're not happy with what's going on where you work, why not get a job elsewhere? That's what I've always done. BA apparently is hemorrhaging over a million quid a day, the cost of fuel is volatile and the vile likes of Ryan Air is destroying the industry as it has been. BA have to change in order to survive - become more competitive and bring it's costs down. This action just demonstrates what a loathsome entity Unite is. Firstly, cynically ruining the plans of those hoping to get away for the Christmas period, secondly dragging the reputation of BA down. Who would choose to fly with this airline when its so often struck down by action such as this? Personally I wouldn't be surprised if this isn't the writing on the wall for the British Airways and reduncancy all round will result. Well, you asked for it. It's like being back in the 70s. Somebody bring back Maggie.

    Regards, Rob Philpott.

Must be nice being able to do so. Have you ever spent time in a unionized job? Odds are you can be replaced by and shlub off the street and have little to no marketable skill to anyone outside where you work now. If they don't kick the company like this, the company will happily step on them, and give the executives bonuses for doing it in the name of cutting costs.

have you spent any time in a unionised job (assuming that you mean non-unionised) where you can be only be dismissed if you leave the union, you are surounded by people who know that, as long as they dont upset the union, they have a job for life (the company will be bailed out by the govenment if its brought to its knees by union action) yes thats right you could only be instantly dismissed for non union membership even drunkenness/physical assault/theft would only get you warnings but leave the union and you were out the door BA are trying to stop the rot, they want to bring in the same work conditions as it has outside of Heathrow its pilots have already taken a paycut, it has shed 40% of its managers and pay freezed the rest the staff who are threating strikes are the BEST PAID in the industry - there is nothing in this current package that would reduce the pay basically they want to reduce the crew on long haul flights from 15 to 14 however they are making the manager in charge of the stweards/stewardesses work along side them instead of a pure oversight role (note that its not these staff that are striking despite them being the major losers in terms of workload) the Union have had the full list of changes for months and have dragged its feet while BA lose over a million a day. this is less to do with workers rights and a lot more to do with unions flexing thier power. the problem with unions is that they get power crazy and stop looking after the members and start looking after their own agenders

Go away and research the subject, analyze the options for and against, understand the problem and them come back when you agree with me.

I've seen bad unions, I was mostly answering the bit about why there are unions at all. Most of the union shops I've seen stupid decisions from on high cost a whole lot more than anything the union did, even with the bad ones.

The unions are actually, I would say, necessary devils. Without unions what happens is that the employees are left to the mercy of top management and managers' who would force gullible employees to run behind their stinking arses and derive a sadistic pleasure in that. Unions do play a good role in safeguarding nation's interest too. Currently, Finance Ministry of India (http://www.finmin.nic.in/) picked up a crazy disastrous decision of consolidating public sector banks to give an undue advantage to private players. Whilst one public sector bank (State Bank of Saurastra) already fell prey to this ploy, another one (State Bank of Indore) is being targetted into the dragnet. The bank unions are trying they are level best to protect the same and thus saving the nation's economomic stability. Because capitalism works best when there are far less jobs than workers.

Personally, I love the idea that Raymond spends his nights posting bad regexs to mailing lists under the pseudonym of Jane Smith. He'd be like a super hero, only more nerdy and less useful. [Trevel]
