I guess I'm glad nobody was hurt, but shouldn't you expect this from people you say have no respect for life and then steer ride right in front of? [anti-whaling-boat-Ady-Gil-cut-in-half-by-Japanese-ship]

I saw the footage of this this morning, and while it was extensively damaged, I'd hardly call it cut in half... it had a bit of the nose taken off, and was still floating... From the footage I saw, I suspect that the skipper of the Ady Gil is at fault - even though he technically had right of passage, he purposely appeared to drive in front of the other ship and then cut power to cause the collision...

That is my understanding, as well. It ended up sinking. Apparently the Australian PM says "he" will pay $1.5M (A$?) towards a new one.

I heard initial reports that it sank, but that doesn't seem to be the case... Of course, it may have been abandoned... Edit: The Greens are calling for the govt to pay $1.5M, doubt that they will though. Here's an interesting article about it all: clickety[^]

Looks like someone decided to 1 vote you. I think that the Japanese are being incredibly obtuse about all of this. Their cultural right to eat whale is not that much older than any American's cultural right to drop nukes on Japan. Either way, there is nothing wrong with rejecting what our ancestors did in ignorance. That's why my 13 yo daughter is not married and pregnant. However, it's clear that the green movement is at least as much focused on profit as on saving the earth, and I'd never take any piece of green propaganda at face value, or assume they did not help to engineer the situation.

They are fools... Sea Shepherd are a group of vigilantes... I don't dispute that the Japanese shouldn't be whaling in our territorial waters (if they want whales, get them in their own waters), but to risk life and limb like this is plainly ridiculous...

Saw the footage too. From the Japanese vessel you can see all the crew in the back of the Ady Gil as the 'research' vessel wiped its nose (clean off). The more interesting footage is the one from one of Sea Shepherd's other vessels. You can plainly see the Ady Gil stationary (as you can be in the Southern Ocean) but almost in the way of the Japanese vessel. The Japanese vessel plainly veers starboard toward the Ady Gil, then immediately port. I think the captain of the Japanese vessel was determined to give them a fright but oversteered in the first instance - for a big ship it could sure as hell turn fast. If I remember rightly the Ady Gil is a rebadged (and repainted) round the wheel speed machine designed to run on bio-fuel. In its round the world travels it apparently rammed / damaged a much smaller vessel - Karma? Also at one point, powering through very rough seas, the whole boat was somewhere around 6 meters under water, before powering out - now of course it's staying underwater.

I just love Koalas - they go great with Bacon.

Considering how they are the most technologically advanced country in the world, I wonder why they don't try to invent some sort of hyper-aquatic-farm where they can cultivate fast growing whales of all kinds. That'd give them their sashimi material :)

So which of the two is she? If anything, the former is probably the better choice.

I've heard of profit being used to lure in unsuspecting businessmen in order to make them go green. Just because they are used together does not mean they are interested in saving the earth because of profit. That being said...

Was the Ady Gil harrassing the Japanese whaler, trying to make a point? I ask because that's not an uncommon green tactic, and judging by the water cannon activity I'd say that there was definitely a fight of some sort going on prior to the collision. Perhaps the green guys never got around to reading that bit from Sun Tzu about knowing your enemy. While many nations in history had a warrior culture, Japan refined it and took it to extremes for many, many centuries. America nuked Japan because we understood them enough to realize that nothing less would even get their attention, let alone stop them. And this is the culture that the green guys want to play chicken with? Somebody seriously needs to send them some old Akira Kurosawa / Toshiro Mifune movies.
