The REAL solution was covered in an episode of Sliders. There is an optional lottery for everyone. If you win, you get treated to riches equal to your wildest dreams, but soon after you have to take an extended sleeping pill. That makes me think of another interesting possibility. If we could perfect cryogenic technology, we could freeze a few billion people until we come up with some solutions for pollution and such. And perhaps just let it solve itself over a few hundred years while the environment cleanses itself. Then, we thaw them and they continue life as if nothing had ever happened.

with San Francisco! My first foray into the United States and this place looks great. :) Apart from my actual work, I've earmarked plenty of time for sight-seeing. Any suggestions on places to see? And the streets are so organized here that I got lost

Make sure you cross the bridge to Marin; especially Sausalito and Tiburon: lived there for a while some years back; absolutely wonderful places.

Alcatraz tour is really good. Looks kinda lame but is really worth the trip. Great views of the bridge and the city and the audio tour is well done. Muir Woods if you've never seen an old growth redwood. If you like a bit of history, check out the Jeremiah O'Brien Liberty Ship at pier 45. Make sure you go down into the engine room. Some weekends they fire it up. It's a sight you will never forget.

Only reason I didn't see it was because of price (was already over budget on that trip and would have had to pay for a couple people). But I'll surely be seeing that next time!

Make sure you see all the wharves. The pier with the old amusement machines is a must. The pier with the seals on the side has some really good food. Book a cruise for Angel Island and Alcatraz ASAP, you need to book it days in advance. If you can take two days and do a full day on Angel, I would do it. It's VERY cold there tho. Of course, see the bridge, and the view over the bridge from the other side. As you drive over the bridge, take the turnoff to the left for a better view. If you can take the drive to the museum of computing, they have a babbage machine working there, or they did when I was there. Lots of cool stuff to see there, either way. If you like garlic, there's an excellent restaurant called the stinking rose. There's also the Haight Ashbury area if you're into that sort of thing, it's a really interesting place to visit. There's more, but I forget. I love San Fran.

As a germanally arrogant European, I freely admit that SF is a bearable town :) If you have / can rent a car: Muir Woods[^] it's just north of it, a very impressive and beautiful redwood grove. That is, really really big trees. Been there twice already. In Santa Rosa is the Peanuts[^] museum (think Snoopy, not students sunday lunch). Downtown... The harbor cruise has some good chance to see whales, and a decent view of the Golden Gate bridge.

Right you are about the spelling. I also misstated the location. I was in a hurry and didn't proof read my post. Another even smaller city that is supposed to be a good location in SC is Charleston.
