We have the "Social Insurance Number" (SIN) up here in Canada. It's (as far as i can tell), the same thing as the SS number in the US, except with a different name. :-D That's why I ramble so much. If you're short and quotable, there's a much greater danger of ending up in a sig. [Christopher Duncan on how to prevent yourself from ending up in a sig]

Thanks Michael! Is that something that everyone is required to have? By the way, is the number unique across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland? Cheers, Tom Archer Author - Inside C#, Visual C++.NET Bible

Everybody is given a NI number when they leave school (when I left I was given a plastic card with the number on - but that was a long time ago) I don't know for certain that they are unique but it would be a real admin nightmare if they werent. • he was really Bill SerGio in disguise, and was found out
          • Chris got tired of circumcision threads
          • he got all pissy about something someone said to him, and stomped off

Unfortunately, none of those seem terribly unlikely, so i doubt i'll be able to snag any conspiracy theorists...

South Africans are given ID books. Once you have an ID book you are allowed to live and work there permanently. In the old days our drivers licenses were stamped in the books. Now we get seperate cards, which need to be reapplied for each 5 years. An easy way for the government to make some extra cash. :suss:

I've always heard that there was an idea behind Win ME... I still can't figure out what that was... anyboy know??? I;ve herad the idea was that it was supposed to be n operating system but I doubt this. - Brian Delahunty

As many here may or may not know, US citizens have a unique ID associated with them called a social security number. I believe Candians have something similar. Do EC countries have unique numbers for their citizens or does each individual country have something specific to that country? What about Asia? Inquiring minds... Germany: Photo ID (req'd, you get when you get 16) has a number, and I think there's a separate SIN. And of course everywhere else. We rule!

In India, you can get a passport number. But then, many people in India do not have passports.

In India, people have PANs (Personal Account Numbers) whicch is directly related to their Income Tax file. It's not an obligatory thing, so obviously many people don't get it, so they can cheat on income taxes (someday I intend to write a series of books on corruption in India). But nowadays more and more people need to fill in their PANs on forms, say for opening an account with a bank, etc. Then you also have passport, voter's identification card, etc. But there is nothing which all the Indians have in common.
                      Regards,

In Denmark we have the CPR number - "Central People Registry" loosely translated. It consist of your 6 digits with your birthday and a random 4 digit code. Girls get a number divideable by two, and boys... well the opposite. I do not know whart they do with hermaphrodites. Christian Skovdal Andersen Don't mention the war...

In Italy we have an ID-Card (carta d'identità) that has a unique code and also a code made from name, date of birth, place of residence generated by our version of the "IRS". -- Looking for a new screen-saver? Try FOYD: http://digilander.iol.it/FOYD
