Compact Camera Suggestion
-
Recently one of my friend asked me about some good middle range point and shoot Cameras. I know Canon and Nikon are there in the top list and i guess some models are good like Powershot or Coolpix or may be even Sony Cybershot. Personally I am a Canon fan as its my first and ever DSLR. But this is not for me. So Whats your suggestion about a good model? Which one you prefer?

For the more serious stuff I am using a Canon EOS 400, and for taking some quick snapshots I carry a Canon Ixus 810 with me most of the time. The Ixus isn't the greatest camera maybe, but it is easy to use, is compact and has a good feel&touch and does the work, I bought it for. So you see, I am a Canon-fan myself.

For snaps I like Olympus, Good Quality for the money and ruggedly built.

With cameras, you should always go for the best. So Leica[^]. Seriously though I have just read a comparative review where the winner was Canon Powershot S90[^], and the two runners up were the Lumix DMC-lx3[^] and the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-TX7[^]. I cannot advise on a personal level as I am still on film.

Wow, Leica is a real brand? I always thought it was just a made-up name in Eurotrip[^]

Author of the Guardians Saga (Sci-Fi/Fantasy novels)Unfortunately, too recent to have any meaning for me. The last time I went to the cinema was when I was dragged kicking and screaming to see 'Free Willy' by my ex. Turned out that it was only because she thought it was a special offer.

Well, I dunno if you'd like Eurotrip... It's a hilarious movie, but kind of targeted toward us USians... It really rips on Europe, as you may have guessed :) *starts humming "Scotty Doesn't Know"... catchy tune*

Well, it's satisfying for snapshots, documentation... but not that great, if you wanna do really great artsy stuff. Sometimes the pictures are a bit pale, especially in unfavourable light-conditions. It's actually not too bad. But we compared the Ixus-photos with those taken by a Canon PowerShot, and the PowerShot-photos usually came out a bit better. PowerShot's bigger, though. I use the Ixus also on hiking trips in the mountains, when I don't want or can't carry around the 400D. The great thing with a camera like the Ixus is, that you can carry it in a small bag on your belt, and even when hiking with heavy rucksack or when climbing, it's not in your way or increasing the weight of your bag, and it's always at your hand quite fast, while bigger cameras like the 400D or even these in-between-compact-and-DSLR-cameras always have to be put into the rucksack or a special camerabag, which is usually dangling at your side and putting unilateral pressure on your shoulders. Oh, another great thing about the Ixus 810 is the wheel. You can flick through your pictures very fast by simply turning that wheely thing around the main ccontrol-button.

Author of the Guardians Saga (Sci-Fi/Fantasy novels)Yes, Leica is a real brand. I made the mistake of sending my girlfriend a link to a leica about a year ago, and for the next 6 months I had to listen to her telling me she wanted a leica (M8.2) instead of a ring. I gave her a ring in December and she's very happy with it. She didn't see the appeal of diamonds before, but she really likes the one she has now. I've hardly heard leica mentioned since  I did buy her a Nikon (D90 I think) last year.

My girlfriend and I both have Lumix's. They're a nice little compact and take great pcitures. The girlfriend is a graphic designer and a keen photographer. She was reluctant to move to digital from her old Minolta, but I got her a Nikon D90 last year and she's hardly picked up the Minolta since. She got herself a Lumix a couple of years ago, cause it was one of the best compact cameras around, in her opinion.
