Near where I used to live was a peanut roasting factory, and the stench was awful. So after numerous complaints, the owners remedied the situation by putting in an artificial smell to cover the bad one. From then on the whole area was enclosed in the aroma of roast chicken. Hmmmmm...Chicken...Must eat chicken... Seriously, the sales of KFC in the area rose by 300%!

This[^] business is located about a quarter mile from my house. When the breeze is from that direction, and they're firing up the furnaces that day, you can get a faint whiff of burnt metal in the morning. When the wind is blowing fairly hard, and it's really humid (like today), the stench is hard to take X|. To top it all off, we're running a local special on mashed pole cat on our local roads this week. The world stinks today.

I used to work near a coffee factory. Not sure what they did exactly, but in the mornings you could walk into work and smell fresh coffee! It was quite nice! :)

Try adding wool-scourers to the list of bad smell emitters - they'll be somewhere near the top (or is that the bottom?)

The used to be a sweet factory across the road from my school that produced some lovely aromas :-). They also had a badly maintained fence and produced the sweets in big bags that were easy to sling over the frame of a bike and wheel away down the railway lines, allegedly. Andy B

Hewlett-Packard makes sauces in addition to hardware? This explains much. As a counterpoint, when I was a kid we had a potato chip company down the street from us. When they were cooking, the smell was awesome  :-D.

Having experienced first-hand the putrid, slimy mess that is their software (and their hardware, these days), it's probably a good policy.

I used to stay down the road from the HP sauce factory in Brum. That kicks out some rare old stinks that you don't want to be downwind of.

I bought a bottle of HP Sauce recently. I've only got three more payments to make and it's mine.

One of my first jobs was in a wool combers/scourers, I caught the bus near to the fat rendering plant after walking past the sewage works. Is it a wonder that I have virtually no sense of smell left

My old neighborhood was a little plat of 20 houses located next to a state highway. We were surrounded by farms, one of which used 'organic' fertilizers exclusively. Also, half a mile away was a chicken farm. It got a little 'ripe' occasionally.
