I think you're overestimating the violence factor here... The NYPD has gotten pretty good at non-violent crowd control over the years... Remember, we have the United Nations here, so every time someone like Ahmanijad (However you spell that #%&*(@'s name) comes into town, they have to keep people from lynching him :)

Things will get worse when they actually start building that thing, and this is a "threat in our own backyard" added to "our govt has deserted us". Much worse than some middle-eastern sucker with an impossible name who's just visiting.. Torch and pitchfork. Molotov cocktails and guns.

We wouldn't even have heard about it. It's only a big issue because too many people seem to equate "Islam" to "Al Qaeda"...

I doubt even that is true. Color me cynical, but I don't think you would have heard anything at all if it hadnt been an election year, and certain desparate right wing politicos were looking at a poor showing.

Nah, keep in mind that the guys actually building it would be the construction unions, and nobody messes with them in NYC. Right now, the biggest threat to it is the unions refusing to actually work the site... If that happens, it'll probably never get done.

I wouldn't call that a threat, but rather "the biggest win possible" - officials won't have give in an say that some things are more important than freedom, The People won't have to resort to violence, the people behind the islamic center thing won't (well the risk is reduced.. still, who knows) get killed, everyone wins.

Next time tell NYPD to take the day off. The world would be a better place.

I wouldn't consider that a "win" at all... Racism and bigotry would win. So much for this being a land of religious tolerance... Sure, the builders probably should have anticipated this kind of reaction and taken that into consideration when choosing a site, but that was the site they picked. They own the rights to the building, so they're perfectly within their rights to build the center. And if anyone does decide to initiate violence against it, then I hope they're caught and given the maximum sentence, to make a clear statement.

...is right twice a day. I can't believe I actually agree with Ron Paul on something... The issue in question is the so-called "Ground Zero Mosque," which is actually an Islamic Cultural Center[^] (though it contains a "prayer space") they plan to build a couple blocks away from the World Trade Center site in NYC. Fun little issue that really shows peoples' true colors... We've got the racist bigots who basically want to kick anything Islam-related out of the city... Then there's the semi-racist ones who just want it moved a little further from Ground Zero (And a little further, and a little further...). Then there are the politicians who like to turn this into a big song and dance to try to win votes... Well, Ron Paul may be dancing with the rest of them, but at least he's on the right side of it[^]. Of course, so is Obama, and so is Bloomberg (Mayor of NYC). Apparently people are pissed about it being constructed on "hallowed ground"... Because the abandoned building that's the former home of a Burlington Coat Factory[^] is so "hallowed," right? For the record, there's also been an existing mosque in the area since 1970 (Before the WTC was finished), only about five blocks from the WTC... Oh, and there's a strip club around there too, just to make sure that "hallowed ground" isn't too pure. So, Ron Paul actually said something intelligent... Wow... I don't expect to agree with him on much else, but he deserves a cookie for this one.

Good question. The prevailing attitude in NYC seems to be either "Sure, go ahead" or "Wish you wouldn't do that, but it's your right." Most of the heavy opposition seems to be from elsewhere.

I agree with harold on this. This situations really hits a sore spot in many many people, especially New Yorkers who suffered the most, and the parents of dead Iraq veterans and the veterans themselves. The NYPD will get steamrolled because quite frankly they do not have the passion and rage of the angry mobs. Any resistance by the authorties will only make things worse. The best option for these Islamic extremists is to just find a new place to worship. It's the most logical option.

Disrespect for America as it stands. Ron Paul supports the legal right to build the mosque because he respects the principles America was founded on, he does not however support the idea of building the mosque.

Obama: "Muslims have the same right to practice their religion as anyone else in this country. That includes the right to build a place of worship and a community center on private property in lower Manhattan, in accordance with local laws and ordinances." Obama, speaking on Saturday after giving a speech on the Gulf Coast oil disaster in Panama City, Florida, told CNN he "was not commenting and I will not comment on the wisdom of making the decision to put a mosque there," referring to the area near ground zero. Bloomberg: "Government should never — never — be in the business of telling people how they should pray, or where they can pray," Mr. Bloomberg said on Monday. "We want to make sure that everybody from around the world feels comfortable coming here, living here and praying the way they want to pray." So Obama is supporting the right to build it, but won't comment on whether it's a good idea (Which is a politically-correct way of saying he thinks it's bad form). Bloomberg is saying the government should stay out of it entirely. Now, don't look now, CSS, but it looks like you agree with Obama! :)

Obama can use all kinds of flowery language, he can put any words he can think of together in a manner that makes him sound like he is a smart white guy with a real education, but he is just a fucking lying manipulative destructive criminal piece of shit. His actions speak far louder than his words.

NYC has protests every day for one thing or another, so I doubt it'll be that big a deal. Polls have shown that while a slight majority of New Yorkers are against Park51 being built (Though those of us in Manhattan are slightly in favor of it), a larger majority support the right to build it.

The extremists aren't the ones building Park51. That's like equating our local Rabbis with terrorists in Israel, or the local priests with the Spanish Inquisition. Islam is just a religion, like any other.

You put too much faith in the NYPD. Controlling protest is one thing. Stopping a million or so rioting people is another thing.
