I've got_ten_ a shiny new (to me) HTC Hero phone. It's kinda nice, and definite jump on my last phone. Downloading the PC sync app. I've had to a) Turn off my phone, open the back and type in my phone's serial number. I'll be charitable and assume this is used simply to make sure I get the right version of software... b) Watch it install Adobe Air. I thought I'd done quite well keeping my PC uncontaminated by Adobe... c) Now "Before installing the software, disable your computer's virus protection..." And I haven't even got far through the install! So much for Android = fluffy and good, not evil at all. Iain.

I don't understand why HTC suggest the first place to look for the SN is behind the battery, it's in one of the phone information/about phone sub-menus. Aside from that HTC Sync isn't a requirement for Android, or even HTC's handsets. You can happily remove it from your PC if you don't feel it adds anything, I certainly don't think it does :)

I have an Android (Nexus One) and have never installed anything on my PC for it. if you want to put anything on the phone, just connect the usb and drag and drop. It appears as a removable drive. The installation stuff will just be for all the crap that comes with the phone, similiar to all the crap that comes with a new PC/laptop and you just end up removing because you don't want or need it.

It's the networks that make HTC do the whole serial number thing. They like to make sure that you get their pretties when you turn the phone on. I got fed up waiting for Orange to sort out Android 2.x on the hero so I installed the Villain Firmware and it's been great (since i realised that I needed to turn down the default screen brightness if i wanted any battery life). Silly thing is that the reason I got an android phone rather than an iPhone was so I didn't have to hack my phone to be able to do all the things I wanted. I've never had to install any adobe malware on my PC though, that's evil, I like to keep my PC free of their junk.

It's a requirement to use it as a modem for my laptop, I believe... Iain.
