I agree with PO'H here, it is not in very good taste to publicly mock a newbie.

And why have you brought this to the Lounge? So the OP had a problem understanding how to write the code - at least he'd tried to write some. Why is this suitable for mocking? Just because they didn't understand something doesn't mean that it should be shown here for derision. Please don't do this again - it's not nice and it isn't clever.

So, can you describe in detail what are the posting guidelines for The Lounge. As far as I know about Lounge posting guidelines, I can't post programming questions here (well, this wasn't one) and my posts have to be KSS and therefore, I followed the 'Lounge posting guidelines' perfectly. I just brought it here because this was a typical 'Plz Snd m da Codezzz' question and I have seen many people bring many such things to 'The Lounge' earlier as well. And I have seen many people mocking better things than that. Why a certain set of rules apply for certain people here and it doesn't for others?

In this case, I believe that pretty much everybody that has brought a posting like this to the lounge has been jumped up and down on for it. It's arrogant, and demeaning because you are mocking this person behind his(her?) back. Would you say this to their face? If not, then don't do it - and yes, I've been guilty of this in the past, but at least I am mature enough to recognise that it was wrong and try to correct my behaviour.

This is more about the acceptable norms of behaviour. You don't need a friend to give you a list of rules when you go to their house, so why should you here. You wouldn't sh!t on their carpet and then say "Well, your rules didn't say I couldn't."

No it wasn't. The OP had tried something out, and was having a problem understanding the solution - I assume that you are such a genius that you understand everything instantly, and have never needed anybody to explain things to you. There's an old adage "When the learner hasn't learnt, the teacher hasn't taught" which means that the problem is generally with the explanation not being in a manner/form that the student can understand.

As far as an excuse goes, that's a bad one. I'm not equating the two situations, but to illustrate a point some people find racism acceptable - does it excuse it that they say that other people do it?

posted an answer in the form of a win32 API wrapper class, I don't think mocking about people is right here in the Lounge.

Off course I would. Simply because very clearly the OP hasn't tried enough. Look at the revisions of the question for a detailed view. Furthermore, the code that she (looks to be a female from her name) has posted is simply an example code which she has just copy-pasted without doing any further effort.

Point taken but as I said earlier same rules should apply to everybody. I would really like to see people respond with such enthusiasm when a serial poster mocks somebody on such a thing.

I am no genius but at least I try few things myself before asking for help and even then I know how to ask for help rather than saying 'Plz, it is urgent'. And as I said earlier, OP obviously didn't try anything out.

That was not an excuse. I just wanted to say that same rules should apply for everyone. I am a very occasional poster but I roam here a lot and I have seen an old-timer(Nish) vehemently trying to take people away from here (to Indian forums) just because some of the old-timers really like to make fun of others because of such things. Why not stand up to that then? Something is really not right here, don't you think so?

Fair point, and the advent of the Indian Lounge is one of the aspects of CP that I don't like. Let me explain before you get too upset - I have been known to mock others, and it's a character trait that I don't like so I have tried to moderate it (not always successfully). Sometimes this has been seen as an attack on a person based on their race, and this is purely down to language differences with me saying something that I meant to be taken in one way, and somebody taking it in another - this is nothing to do with them; if I'd been clearer or less mocking then it wouldn't have been an issue. The point is - this was bad behaviour on my part and not one I'll excuse in myself. So, why don't I like the Indian Lounge then (I'm going to call it the IL from now on)? If the IL was only a place where Indian speaking people went to chat about things that were of interest to them then I'd be all for it. The fact that it is seen to be a necessary training ground to teach people how to survive here in the Lounge or the forums is not a good thing - it does not reflect well on CP or the CP community. If somebody is a troll, then fair enough - ignore them/mock them if you want to feed their fire, but if somebody has come here to seek help then help them. Sometimes the help won't be what they want - but it might just be what they need which is just as important (e.g. directing them to the appropriate forum). The danger that I see is that CP will become fragmented - I've spent a lot of time here and I plan on spending a lot more time here, but if it becomes an "us against them" site, I will walk away.

Mocking is an integral part of test driven development. I think it's completely appropriate on a dev site.

Okay, that is a very inaccurate statement there. There are various reasons why Chris decided to start country/language specific forums here and I will not go into those reasons. He asked me to moderate and help fine tune the new India-specific forum, and I have been doing that quite enthusiastically the past several weeks. I do NOT take people away from this forum. The core idea of the India specific forum is to help orient newbie Indian members with general forum etiquette and posting guidelines. Incidentally I haven't asked any one to stop posting here and to move over there. Rather, the idea is that once they spend some time there, they will be better conditioned to post in the general forums without fear of backlash.

Hey Pete, Do read my response to Aamir below. I don't personally believe that sub-forums like the Indian forum will lead to fragmentation. I honestly feel that the forum has helped quite a few relatively newer Indian members improve their forum etiquette. Or maybe improve is not the right word, I'd say it's more correct to say that they've been helped with adjusting their behavior to a manner more appropriate for a global audience such as that on CP.
