You've misread DD's post the correct answer to "Hello, how are you?" might be this ("I'm well, how are you"or "musn't grumble, and you?" or "well, and you?" etc). If someone asks "How do you do?" it's a formalism, the correct response is "How do you do back". If you actually answer the question, the person talking to you will peg you pretty low in the social scale (and the sort of person who ask that question will do this) or put it down to being foreign. You forget exactly how hidebound and class-concious English society still is.

Where the 'hood? Have you ever heard anyone from the UK say that (except ironically)?

And thats why I hate the UK. Its class ridden. I dont give a toss if some wanker objects to being given an answer when he asks 'how do you do'. And if he thinks I am in anyway 'lower class' then he can go f*** himself and his stupid class snobery. Christ, it really reminds me why I live in France!

No, unfortunately its all to fresh in my memory, and one of the principle reasons I hate the place and liive in France. (And by the way its the classism displayed by working class people that I find the most distrubing, for I have what is called a 'posh' accent, which has utterly bared me from enjoying the company of many people in the UK.) Vive la France! --edit-- As for 'hows it hanging' I have heard it a lot in the West Country.

I have the opposite problem. I come from a working-class background and believe me the descrimination is worse & I've seen both side of the fence. I went to a Public (rather than "State" for USian) School and a pretty "Smart" (for UKians) university. You should have seen my interview to get into Oxford :- Needless to say I didn't, I ended up (like so many) at Durham. I have even had problems getting consultancy work (this is not as bad as it used to be), as my accent doesn't fit. Worse, compared to many in Newcastle, I sound "posh" so I get it both ways.

"I am well, how are you" is the correct response. Should they ask "How do you do?", the correct response is to say "How do you do?" back.

Yeah, I can believe its better up North, they might be miserable up there but at least they arent wankers. But, whatever you think or have heard about France, know that it is a great place to live, and not for the obvious reasons, such as cafes and restaurants. I talk of the French people. They are simply a great bunch. Warm, friendly, open, sociable, and lively. Let me give you an example. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TSzecX2CZ88[^] This is the French equivalent of Wimbledon. But they take it for the joke it is, and dont mind the guy clowning around, using the microphone, hitting the ball. No security guards are called, no one is angry, or scared. Take a look at his other vids, Saving Private Ryan is funny too. They are a cool, laid back bunch the French.

Not miserable either (guess where I'm from), this is just stereotyping by southerners who assume it is. The main problems are the weather is and the fact economy is shot to hell (and the problems that brings).

For the same reason they need British approval. i.e. null. But they've got it anyway.

Not miserable either (guess where I'm from), this is just stereotyping by southerners who assume it is. The main problems are the weather is and the fact economy is shot to hell (and the problems that brings).

Yeah, the northern thing is a characterisation. Actually northerners are friendly too. If it wasnt for the weather I would live there happily. Watch the vid if you get a chance, you will understand just how the French are.
