Don't agree there. If Ray Ozzie had designed a source control system, it would be SourceSafe.

I have tortoise and svn as two different packages. one is the subversion server... the other one is the client. It seems that the subversion server has been changed and now it can have different flavours: http://subversion.apache.org/packages.html[^] Before you could download it from http://subversion.tigris.org/[^] but it seems that now it it part of apache and therefore the change... I'm interested on following this post... let's see what others say... (I had in mind asking something similar soon). :thumbsup:

There's always Mercurial. [Update] Almost forgot - Mercurial also has TortoiseHg. [/Update]

I also agree with Hans on the Tortoise+SVN and I would add either AnkhSVN or RocketSVN for VS.

The SVN website had 4 or 5 different Windows' versions for SVN. I needed a recommendation on which one to use. No Visual Studio integration needed.

It's not for programming. Mostly Word documents. No Visual Studio or any other programming IDE.

visual SVN is good option but as you need stand alone one, Tortoise SVN works fine.

I'd say definitely go with TortoiseSVN. Single download and install and you have everything you need to connect to your SVN server. Works really well.

Nope. I can't recommend anything that is free in this genre. The absolute BEST version control software I've ever used was StarTeam. Unfortunately, it's expensive as hell (if it;'s even still available).

Git would be the alternative to Hg. IIRC Hg's got a better windows toolchain while GITs is better for Linux (might have something to do with it being Linus's brainchild :rolleyes: ).
