What are you talking about? There was only one Star Wars trilogy. Some people have confused the more recent "Jedi Muppets in Space" trilogy with official Star Wars canon, but they're just trying to legitimize their obsession :-D (Ok, so the original trilogy was campy and pretty formulaic, but it's a lot better than the first Star Trek movie... Though Roddenberry outdid Lucas on his second attempt)

Proud to have finally moved to the A-Ark. Which one are you in?

Wrath of Kahn is one of the all time greats. It's a shame they had to spoil it with a naff follow up.

Forgive your enemies - it messes with their heads

Eh, Search for Spock wasn't horrible... Just not great... As far as I'm concerned, the only REALLY bad ST movie was #5... The Vulcan half-brother searching for god... Ugh... V-ger was incredibly dull, but you have to give them a little leeway, it being their first attempt. But to go from "Nuclear wessels" and "Hello, computer?" to the "Great Barrier" and Sybok... No excuse for that.

AFAIK the original plan has been that the second trilogy will be a sequel not prequel. Lucas has hired Timothy Zahn (still not so popular those days) to write the script. What has happened next I don’t know, the rumor has it that there were words between the two, or Lucas just changed his mind but we all know the result. Later the Timothy scripts were published as trilogy of novels and I read them about 10 years ago. Frankly speaking not exactly a masterpiece but truly entertaining and Zahn definitely succeed with keeping the spirit and atmosphere from the original series - something that the Lucas prequel has never achieved.

Strictly speaking, Roddenberry was bumped his position of overall control on ST-I when Paramount freaked out about trying to make a movie of a TV show and hired William Wise as director. Wise was responsible for blowing the budget on SFX and for insisting that they all appear in the movie. Both Star Wars and Close Encounters were blockbusters with lots of SFX, so, obviously ST:TMP needed to be filled with lots of bells and whistles - and enough plot to have filled a 1-hr TV show nicely - indeed it already had, since "The Changeling" in season 2 had the same semi-Frankenstein and the monster plot. Roddenberry was tarred with the same brush as Wise by Paramount, however, when the movie barely broke even, and had no control on ST:TWOK. Harve Bennet and Nick Meyer deserve all the credit for saving the franchise.
