Dave, I know you don't mean anything by it but sometimes I get sick of sosme shit treating me like I'm nothing. It's also usually the incompetents who get somewhere by trampling on others and lying about them. So - should I keep fighting back or should I give up?

We've all worked with (and some of us still work with) delightful people like that -- if you can, do; if you can't, sh*t on someone. The only way to deal with them is by having quiet, calm chats with the same people (usually managers) that they talk to -- but think calmly and carefully about what you're going to say. Getting upset about it only hurts you.
