I agree :-) But India's gender ratio is going down alarmingly, so soon there won't be enough women to procreate normally. Bad solution to a real problem.

Heh :-) It's kinda funny (in a nice way) to be talking to people who knew me (and her) before we got together.

Quite - for example, how many perfectly edible pumpkins are being wasted on Halloween across the globe this week?

So you suggest people not have any children because they may grow the number eventually to 8 billion and then 9 billion and then 10 billion which will make Earth more sad, more sad and more sad. Or you are just pointing out it is sad and not do anything about it?

Nobody says something like this. The point is that people who are barely able to sustain, educate and bring up one kid often have a soccer team on their own.

Is it bad form to point out that nobody has any idea when the 7 billionth person will be born? It could be in a few years time for all anyone knows.

The sad thing is that this enormous number doesn’t contribute enough to the human progress. The vast majority of the scientific discoveries/technical and medical achievements/popular culture in the last two or so hundred years are coming from North America, UK, France, Germany, Italy, Russia and few other countries. Most of the mentioned states haven’t changed significantly (not even doubled) their population the last 100 years and some are in decline the last 30. Something has to be done with the education and educational systems in the poor countries with a huge population growing rates. If we have 7 billion well educated, sane and not hungry people we will be in the space in no time.

Yeah, the bad thing is that most of that population boom is among the poorest people on earth.

Seems India is going to overtake China in having the largest population. Now I think it's time for the world to think about contraception.

Metro RSSUnfortunately, they have. To the detriment of their societies. As has been pointed out, most of the population growth is in "poor" countries. So, when you go look at the "non-poor" societies, you see alarming drops in birth rates, and a correspondingly rapidly aging society. Looking at two asian countries - Japan and China, the results are staggering. If Japan doesn't do something soon, and it may be too late, they will simply fade. People in China are already sounding the alarm. When you have a lot of people, you need some sustainable replacement rate, or your society falls apart. The speed at which China's population is aging is staggering. All it takes is a couple of generations, then you're dealing with simple physics.

Why is it a sad day? The earth can sustain a _lot_ of people if resources are managed appropriately.

This is kinda sad! It was sad back in the Greek/Roman times when they fretted about over-population too. Back when the population bomb came out we knew we could only have 2 kids or we'd be starving by now. I'm not sure how many of these man-made end-of-the-world-as-we-know-it/we-are-about-to-destroy-life-on-earth I've already lived thru. I've got 4 years 88 days to make it thru the global warming fraud now....we are doing just fine!

I've just carved 3. Although I grew them myself and I still have the innards. Dunno what to do with them mind, but it seems a waste to just chuck 'em.
