Nazi Slaves being Taxed.[^] How typical of our European neighbours that when things are a bit tight and they will be required to foot the bill of all the profligate countries in Europe that they decide to retroactively tax people enslaved under Nazi Rules. Hitler would have been proud of them.

Sorry, thi is money, given by Germany, to Belgiums, livinb in Belgium, as compensation for being used as slave labour. So, are you suggesting that these people, unlike every other recipient of a German pension, should NOT pay tax? Perhaps the Germans should just stop giving them their pension if taxing them on it is so offensive to you.
============================== Nothing to say.
Perhaps the Germans shouldn't have used slave labour in the first place, or at least, taxed them at source back in the 40's. To retrospectively tax them for the last 6 years seems a little unfair too. And how much will it raise? Bugger all in the great scheme of things, certainly not enough to dig France out of the hole it is about to find itself in.

Why would I use a joke icon? There was no joke there. I cannot help it if other people fail to see sarcasm or irony. There are no icons for those. And as for you commenting on my composition style, that is a bit rich considering you cannot make a posting without spelling errors.

Taxing pensions they pay as compensation to slave labor is immoral... So the real question is did Germany become more moral after starting and loosing 2 world wars? Or it just fighting the third one with financial means? Haven't Germany and Germans learned anything?

taxing at the source slave laborers... Now isn't that grand.. How didn't they think of that one in all the havoc...

Sod all compares to the PR error. The UK still taxes black people. Perhaps we should not do so out of guilt for what our forebears did?

So what's the problem? If the wages were zero, then the tax would also be zero, and so they would have paid the tax bill in full. The money received now is a compensation, and under European law, legal compensation does not attract tax.

You need to understand Germans. They have laws, and they follow them, with almost no thought at all. They are utterly incapable of forseeing that taxing these pensions is in any way wrong, or likely to cause offense, and at least be very bad PR. In this respect, no, they havent learnt a thing. But dont forget the Dutch faschists were so numerous they formed an SS division. There were also faschists in Belgium who worked with the Nazis. There were faschists in England who would have too, and the US dont forget, had its own Nazi party. So while it is easy to victimise Germany dont forget that against the backdrop of their time, when eugenics was popular science, and faschism was rife, they weremt so unusual. And by the way, the British invented concentration camps many decades before the Germans.

Oh no, some people who are getting free money from a state that isn't even theirs have to pay some tax on it! How awful! It takes some nerve to be 'furious' or 'outraged' at being taxed on free income which the modern German state is really under no obligation to give to these people at all. (Does Britain pay compensatory pensions for PoWs we kept and used to build infrastructure like the Orkney causeways? I don't think so.)

Really? Passing new laws or changing existing ones is what politicians are supposed to do. And then some years are spent with trying to figure out how to implement the new laws. In the end it's a cross between a government employee and an accountant that adds up how much you should have paid and sends you a nice letter. Especially that last guy would be very surprised. Laws are laws, regulations are regulations. Both have been followed to the letter and everybody has been treated equally. So what are you complaining about? But I have a simple way to get out of their way: I leave the house only at daylight, when the bloodsuckers must stay in their coffins.

Thank you very much. :) I will at least try to think a little more before obeying blindly. But it's very hard... Don't you have any tax offices? Can you dicker and haggle with the beaurocrat there? Or perhaps bribe him? I suspect that he has his laws and regulations as well and follows them. You may perhaps file a complaint if you think he did not. And he is probably also not interested in wether you find that fair or not. He's not the guy who made the laws.

There have been several discussions about invoking a Sarcasm icon. Perhaps enclosing the phrase is dollar signs would do it. $Yeah, very useful!$

Not for me. I like breaking rules. Always have done, natural anarchist I suppose. :) Yes, you can always argue with the dumb system trying to screw you into the dirt. At the very least it is fun, even if your only satisfaction is knowing how much of their time you have wasted. :)

The clue is in the name... POWs are covered under the Geneva Convention, which allows for work to be done by them. (Strangely Officers are exempt from manual labour). But a nice try nonetheless.

Great British moments in history: Invented concentration camps during the Boer war. Sold Opium to the Chinese, and went to war with them to keep on selling it. Stood back when Prussia invadesd France in 1870, then changed its mind in 1914 after Germany became a threat to Britains manufacturing base. Bought and sold slaves. Named an African country after someone who had been sentenced for runnig a protection racket back home (Rhodes). I am sure every other country has its dirty stuff too, but lets not pretend Britian is great for any other reason than it has a small neighbour also full of Britons (Britany).

Oh I know, true on all counts. British army used concentration camps in Cyprus also AFTER WWII There were also collaborators in Greece (my origin) and also among the Arabs of the Middle East not to mention the Bosnian Waffen SS regiment... I can go on. However did anyone else bring a whole continent to havoc twice in 30 years in the 20th century? (Because the French managed to do so before with Napoleon...)
