I hear ya, but I do not believe there is a single source of this problem. In a way we are our own worst enemies. People love scary stuff. They eat it up. Then the corporate media feeds on this, as that is what sells. Then the politicians feed on it as that is what gets them elected. So in the end we eF ourselves over for wanting to watch scary stuff on the news. It was not necessarily the media's fault as they are fighting ratings against other broadcasters. It wasn't necessarily the politicians fault as they are fighting polls against their counterparts.
Computers have been intelligent for a long time now. It just so happens that the program writers are about as effective as a room full of monkeys trying to crank out a copy of Hamlet.
Our 2 party system allowed this march towards totalitarianism. Everyone is unfortunately obsessed with where people and politicians stand on a left vs right scale.

I had hoped, indeed counted on, Obama reversing this trend. But it's just the opposite, he's allowed the trend to worsen, and it's now obvious (even to the most partisan) that it doesn't matter who is in power; the executive and legislative branches do not have any qualms about trampling rights. Donkeys or elephants, they're all the same in that regard. Stripping our freedom in the name of preserving it. Luckily, there is still some measure of checks and balances in this country. The courts actually do their job occasionally and strike down unconstitutional laws. So having said all that, we're still a far cry from a totalitarian state, and indeed a good deal better off than many of our European friends. What sickens me is all the attention SOPA got, while at the same time naming random citizens as enemy combatants (stripping them of all rights) goes ignored.

Would that be the same way that the UK gave in to rampant socialism for 13 long, dark years without so much as a murmur whilst the tories imploded? (I know that does not include you or I, btw) In fact, I agree with you. My point is more for the US to show what will happen if they don't do something to restrain the plainly obvious creeping socialism that is pervading the US. Sadly, there is no credible alternative by the looks of things: I'd love to be proved incorrect.

I'm glad it makes you feel better, but I really believe it won't come to that in our lifetimes. McCarthyism eventually got put in its place (as a historical embarrassment), and the country survived the domestic upheaval during Vietnam and everything else that happened in the 60's. I don't think we're anywhere near either of those situations at the moment. And maybe what you're worried about isn't comparable to that, but there are parallels.

The problem isn't limited to the current generation, either, but goes all the way back to the First Congress. Unfortunately, when men are placed in positions of power over other men, they are corrupted by that power, and seek out more of it. Many times, this quest for power succeeds at the cost of indiviual freedom. Even if we were to "reboot" the country, the same thing would eventually happen all over again. People are great at pointing and laughing, but nobody has even thought to attempt to come up with a way to stop the problem once and for all, and that includes you. No form of government yet devised has resulted in the utopia we all want to see. So how would you approach it?

Now it has been hijacked by corperate lobby groups and corrupt politicians & war mongers. Eisenhower got it spot on in his last speech, his fears have come to fruition. Hopefully the dark age of American fascism comes to a conclusion soon before WW3 is started with Iran under orders from the Zionists in Israel

I'd make you pay for your health care in bullets, that'd slowly solve two of your problems. And if you want us to stop laughing at you, you need to quit this 'land of the free' bullshit.
We mean well, and for a lot of us, the reality may be bullshit (and we know it, otherwise we wouldn't be complaining about it), but the desire is pure. I, for one, want the US to be what the framers envisioned. I don't know why you and others not from these parts don't want to recognize that.

I don't want it to come down to a shooting war - I've been shot at before, and it wasn't all that fun, but what kind of man would I be if I wasn't willing to stand up and fight for what I think is right? My family heritage can be traced all the way back to the Revolutionary War, and I absolutely refuse to discount their sacrifice by cowering behind others.

Probably one that is just clarifying existing policy. If someone thinks differently then I suggest that they try to break into a nuclear silo to protest this law or to jump the fence at the white house to do the same thing. Moreover it is probably redundant since significant national events are probably almost always already covered under use restrictions (perhaps even numerous ones.) Under that verbiage, that means a peaceful protest outside a candidate’s concession speech would be a federal offense…" Too funny..so a "peaceful" protest includes "disorderly conduct" and even violence? "...where those identified as subversive to our government can be re-educated." Obviously the author has a reasoned and is well informed about the US government and its conspiracies. I wonder if the author also has some pictures from inside Area 51?

You do realize that disorderly conduct can be charged for simply being somewhere right? That is why it is possible to "accidentaly" protest. I have seen this happen in non political cases. Madison has an awesome Halloween event on state street. However, of course not all people participate in said event. But in some cases groups of people got "out of hand" (by police definition) and they began to tear gas them and arrest using "Disorderly Conduct" as the reasoning. With that, there were even law abiding citizens that were NOT participating in said event. Merely passing by, but ended up being tear gassed, cuffed, and then jailed for THE ENTIRE WEEKEND. So that explains how it can "accidently" happen. Now as for Disorderly Conduct, well said places are off-limits for even "peaceful" protests, which would get an individual arrested for having an Anti-<NAME YOUR FLAME> sign at such a location. This means that they (executive branch) can now travel around with out having to deal with the petty people bickering about things, cause they just paint an area around where they will be and say "Off Limits- Felony if you trespass". Yes, you can find a reason to 'justify' why they have done it. Just as people try to justify water-boarding.
