Because conditions/the situation in Europe is ripe for it, because French politics is almost driving towards it and because Sarkozy is a really short man. :-)

Other things that the author of the article has decided beforehand: public spending is bad, taxes are bad, GDP is significant, GDP growth is necessary and desirable, etc... More importantly, he has decided that austerity is the way to go, although it has a very bad track record vs recession. I'm not saying what most presidential candidates are proposing is good, they are locked into old systems and bring nothing new to the table (protectionism, xenophobia, tax cuts/tax raises, reverting to old systems, etc...). But on the other hand, the author doesn't have public interest in mind, or is too deeply biased to understand it.

Never have guessed you are French! :) I'd stand by the article: it makes sense and Sarkozy is very short (actually, anyone under 5'11" is short :-))

Well it does make sense. I agree with the problems, not the solutions.

I hope not, as well. But unless we get our financial house in order in the next 2 or 3 years, which is looking more and more doubtful by the day, we'll be worse off than Greece.

Did you notice that all the problems are associated with government? Government is the problem. Less government is the solution.

Could you explain how a 7% minimum unemployment over 10-15 years is associated with government and solved by less government? Less government = more predators. Do you still believe in the Invisible Hand?

Simple: over-regulation, putting up gov't barriers-to-entry, over-taxation of business, gov't demands that every business supply a bunch of "social" programs, etc means that business has less money to hire and pay people. Yes, less overall gov't = predators. I'm not calling for less enforcement of law, I'm calling for less "socialism". What is the "Invisible Hand"? /edit/ Yes, I do believe in the invisible hand to some degree. I also believe the Gov't is there to protect the little guy against the big guy.

The sole function of government is to protect life, liberty and property. Any more than this is usurpation and oppression.
