I was in the process of installing these updates yesterday when my internet got nuked so I had assumed that when Win Update wanted to download and install the same ones this morning, it was because it had been unable to do so yesterday. Then it asked again, then again................ Then I found this[^]. So it seems that it's a MS boo-boo.

My laptop has been failing and retrying to install updates for months now. It is very much on its last legs though, nearly 4 years old, and desperately needs replacing so I can't be bothered trying to fix it. Each time you turn it off it tries to apply an ever increasing number of updates. As the battery has gone I normally just pull the plug out and let it die.

Not exactly. I'm on Vista and I keep getting an update that is failing. I think I eventually just hid the update so I don't have to see it anymore.

Yes.  Just run Windows Update manually which will download any really-not-yet-installed updates (if any) and will fix the problem.  Windows Update showed that I had multiple successfully installed .NET updates from Tuesday's push. /ravi

There is one from this last cycle about fixing a problem with keyboard mapping - the update will fail if some of the mapping dlls (or kbd) files are missing. I had to go into the registry and delete the entries that referred to the non-existent files. KB2686509[^]
