What I meant was to save as jpeg as the last operation - and go back to the original file if there are changes to be made. But I didn't express myself well. I don't normally work with 4GB bitmaps, around 700Mb is the largest I have needed. Even that size was a PITA to play with.

Why am I not surprised that you'd go for GIMP...

Me neither, but 4GB are the "perceived" size given the way my computer is slowed down. Typical size are no more than 70MB.

But it doesn't process bitmap images - except to overlay vector graphics (i.e. text annotations, draw an "X marks the spot") on a photo. I've found GIMP to be different to Photoshop. On the few occasions that I've needed to use it, it's done what I wanted.

For Adobe's sake, I would hope so. best, Bill

Does anyone have any experience with any really good free graphics editors ? I can't afford Photoshop. Whats popular now ? M$ Paint just isn't doing it. Words on JPG files come out blurry after you save it. Really bad .. Thanks in advance !

The absence of proper anti-aliasing of text added post-facto to JPG's is going to be shyte, except, maybe, at very large font-sizes. best, Bill

Paint.Net has helped us in the past. The price is right. Gimp? We installed it but didn't like the learning curve just to achieve a few basics. One person tried Inkscape but we never pursued it in much detail but we sort of thought of it as in-between Paint.Net and Gimp. When we wanted to work with icons, we used Axialis' editor. Okay, you pay about $70 for it but it's a very good tool and has excellent support. And no, I don't work for 'em or 'ave shares with 'em.

Ughh, yes. Back in the 90s there were Web design teachers teaching their students to always do their pages as JPG images -- so they always display as the same size regardless of the computer being used.

Paint.NET can also load and save icons, with a plug in.
