So, 60 Minutes in the US and in Australia ran two stories recently on the bad effects of eating sugar. I recently bought these[^] books and stopped eating sugar. I lost 10 kg the first month, 6 the second, and am stable at about 87 kg, whereas I was 102 before and slowly growing. Did anyone else see the shows or anything else and do the same ?

There have been quite a few articles in the UK press about it too. I think some were posted on here a while back.

I have almost quit all sugar intake but because of borderline diabetes and it seems to have made a difference. I also take 1000mm of Cinnamon daily as it is supposed to help purge your system.

It's really amazing. I had been thinking about how much I would snack through the day and how I felt drawn to the lolly jar. Three days sugar free and I started to feel full. I have lost weight because, with my appetite control working, I just don't eat as much, and yet, I feel more full and better in general.

What is mm as a measure of weight or area ? The books I've read basically suggest that it's excess sugar that's causing the explosion in diabetes. Seems viable to me. I use something called dextrose, it's a pure glucose powder, when I make sweets, etc. But, I don't use it much, or often, for example, I have coffee without sugar now.

10 kilo a mouth after quit eating sugar? You must eat that much sugar before, just kidding :)

I was brought up on sugar and used to add it to everything as a matter of course. Stopped using both sugar and salt (other than what naturally occurs in food) many years ago. No idea if that has affected my weight as it was so long ago. The fact that I'm not an enormous bloater may be an indication, I suppose.

I think sugar is a huge contributor to the diabetes problem. Also other bad dietary choices people routinely make. Some years ago we got the idea that low-fat was the way to go. Consumers bought the idea and "food" manufacturers started reducing fat content in their products. But then it tasted like crap so they increased their use of what ingredient? Sugar. I'll stop now before a full-blown rant develops. :)

I'd rather have sugar than some chemical crap sweetener. Just remember a little bit of anything is okay, it is just when you have too much that it becomes a problem. Since cotton candy != caramel, wouldn't you say that perhaps they are both derived from a sugar class? Sorry, trying to tie in CS to this subject.

Is a little bit of arsenic OK ? How about crack cocaine ? The fructose in sugar is not something our body knows how to process, so it turns it directly in to fat, on our waistline and in our blood. It's also addictive ( because for most of our existence, sugar has been desirable, in the form of hard to get fruit ). Why is there so much obesity now ? Is it because we just lost our collective will power ? It's because we're eating more and more sugar. I cut out sugar, and then did what you say - eat when I'm hungry, don't bother counting calories, etc. As I said, I lost 16 kg

Sorry 1000mg got a nervous twitch in my fingers. :) I also use artificial sweetener but not very often, hate the taste of it. Had an Agent Orange screening a while back and was diagnosed with Type-II diabetes so have been trying to lay off the sugar. It's hard to break because it's in a lot of stuff we consume, at least here in the US. May be a reason for weight gain also but there are a lot of other factors there.

I was always a bit dubious of the many 0% fat food you can find in supermarkets. Quite often they contains a very large amount of sugar, to the point of being the first ingredient in the list. The dogma in England appeared to be that fat make you fat. The word sugar in the contrary carry a rather positive meaning: 'sweet'. Beyond the food industry responsabilities, I wonder how much the weight of the words contributes to the obesity epidermic.
