You do realize that is a challenge to some people, don't you? And you have noticed the red flag in the bottom right, I assume? And no, I haven't pressed it

'No voting in the forums' has been my personal policy since the beginning of the year. I didn't like the way I was behaving with it. Frankly, the tone has improved a lot since Chris turned off the voting. The locker-room style rep-points comparisons have largely gone away as well. It like it too.

It's not about the points themselves but rather what they imply when used. Points, of themselves, don't mean anything: you can't spend them or eat them but they make conversations fun. This place is hollow and fun-free without them.

Here's a fun Gedankenexperiment for you. Imagine you're in a conversation at a party and there were little 'thumbs up' and 'thumbs down' buttons you could push for every comment someone made. How would that change the dynamics of the party? Would it be 'fun'? Would it be healthy? Would it contribute to the discourse, or inhibit it? Words are powerful and can be used with far greater subtlety than binary approval or disapproval. As I used to tell my 4 year old.... "use your words" :sigh: .

You're missing the point. There is nothing wrong with healthy debate but the points gave it all an edge. Now it's a bit like the reading room at the British Library. You do realize that votes can also be used to encourage or applaud? (Which should be their primary purpose). By the way the party you talk of is the annual sign language symposium: the fun starts when you get a Yank and Brit trying to talk to each other... :-)

OK, so to break this down a bit, you'd like the ability to quickly indicate agreement (or disagreement), without having to bother writing a post that says "agree" or "disagree" and clutter up the forum. I get that, but it seems rather independent of a reputation measuring mechanism. Perhaps a simple "thumbs up"/"thumbs down" mechanism would achieve that goal without conflating it with reputation. That would probably be better than the previous reputation mechanism, but I suppose I still believe in words. I'd rather have someone respond to my posts with their own thoughts (as you have), than do an immediate poll on each post. That said, since voting seems important to many of us, I'm warming to the compromise.

I'd do both: why limit yourself and it's still about the fun - you really can't take anything here too seriously - I think you're over thinking the whole thing. There was nothing wrong (not too much, anyway) with the points/reputation system but I guess CP has decided it's easier to get rid of it than address the issues.
