Looking at the thread below, I got to thinking. People often talk about classic movies and trash movies, but what about those movies that aren't really good enough to be classics but are certainly up there in the top 10%. Many movies slip under the radar for no reason I can see and nobody ever talks about them. The Negotiator would come top of the list for me, that almost is good enough to be considered classic. Stigmata, Stir of Echoes, Idle Hands, One Night at McCool's spring readily to mind. Go seems to have a small cult following but a lot of people have never heard of it. Any more thoughts? Donnie Darko is very good, and virtually nobody has seen it :| -- Help me! I'm turning into a grapefruit!

I'm not sure the movie rated at #90 in IMDb's top 250 really qualifies as underrated, though I admit I hadn't heard of it before. Another one I just thought of was "Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil". Startling film. Paul Pleasently caving in, I come undone - Queens of the Stone Age, No One Knows

Well, it's a film that Critics say is great, but nobody went to see. So maybe not underrated by critics, but if you ask a random selection of people about the film, most of them won't have heard of it at all -- Help me! I'm turning into a grapefruit!

Another one that comes close is "The Siege" with annette bening and denzel washington; the first scene when the bus explodes is frightening! Max.

benjymous wrote: Well, it's a film that Critics say is great, but nobody went to see My point was that IMDb top films are voted for by internet users, not by critics. It has over 11,801 votes and it's only been out just over a year (3 months in the UK). By contrast, Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil has been out a little over 5 years and televised all over the world but only has 5,447 votes. So somebody has been watching Donnie Darko :-D. Well, I don't know whether about underrated, but my favourite movie is "What Dreams May Come" with Robin Williams and Annabella Sciorra. Max Von Sydow and Cuba Gooding are brilliant in it too. :) It's probably not one for the guys though - it has me weeping every time I watch it! Anna :rose: www.annasplace.me.uk

Maximilien wrote: Is that the one with kevin spacey and samuel jackson ? Yep, that's the one. I think it asks too many questions about who the good guy is for most people; or maybe it's just one of these "all been done before" situations, ignoring the fact that this does it just as well if not better. That was the problem with Stir of Echoes too, coming as it did just behind Sixth Sense and having a similar feel. Totally different feel but people can't help comparing them. Maximilien wrote: Another one that comes close is "The Siege" with annette bening and denzel washington Never seen that, despite being a fan of Bening, Washington and Willis. Strange that. Speaking of Annette Bening - In Dreams is another very unpopular movie that I thought was great. Very disturbing. Paul Pleasently caving in, I come undone - Queens of the Stone Age, No One Knows

Can't say it had me weeping, I'm not easy to bring to tears when I watch a movie. I bought all the videos but now I don't have a VCR, so I keep toying with the idea of buying the DVDs. I just can't find much point in the end; UK Gold seems to show an entire series in a night at least once a month, I just watch those. Anna-Jayne Metcalfe wrote: It's amazing how little the format matters. Get the right story, and our emotions will find a way to come through. Quite. Problem is that I'm too logical, I get engrossed but some part of me deep down can't help realising that it's only fiction. That said, this week's episode of Jeremiah (on Sky, UK, for those who are way ahead of us) got to me. I don't ever remember a TV series affecting me like that one. Excellent stuff. One couple I know can go through a bottle in a night, so when I go round there I try to make sure I've got lots of alternatives handy otherwise I'll probably lose the following two days. Anna :rose: www.annasplace.me.uk

I'm not sure the movie rated at #90 in IMDb's top 250 really qualifies as underrated, though I admit I hadn't heard of it before. Another one I just thought of was "Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil". Startling film. Paul Pleasently caving in, I come undone - Queens of the Stone Age, No One Knows

Great film, but again it's pretty popular. #87 on IMDb's top 200, not far below my personal favourite Blade Runner. I don't know anyone who's seen Princess Bride and not loved it. [edit]Besides, Krull has to be the mosst underrated sentimental fantasy film ( "it's not the weapon that defeats the monster, it's love" "So what? It's a f***ing cool weapon" )[/edit] I'm trying to get some ideas for films I might just have completely missed here .
