Hi all, I need to purchase a notebook computer to take with me on holidays so I can provide technical support to our clients. I want to be able to make code changes if necessary if a big hairy bug appears while I'm gone, however all the notebooks I've looked at in my price range come with Windows ME. I heard very bad things about ME from many computer technicians when it first came out but they were mostly related to device drivers. Is anyone using ME and VS6?:suss: Ground Zero Tech-Works http://www.ayanova.com

Hi, I'm using it at home, works without any troubles. At work we have a few development-machines working on ME, but most of them are multiboot (2000/ME), once used to the stability of 2000, you won't even think about booting ME :) I think ME isn't that a bad choice. -- Alex Marbus

Thanks Alex, I would prefer NT 2000 as well since we use it on a test machine here and it does seem to be very stable, however it's not an option unless I'm willing to double my budget for a notebook and according to many techs I've talked to most of the ME notebooks do not have device drivers available for other operating systems so I couldn't just buy one then install Windows 2000 on it. I don't know if the situation is just like that here in Canada but there doesn't really appear to be almost any notebooks available with Windows 2000 which is kind of ironic since I recall Microsoft pushing Windows 2000 for notebooks as some point in time. I'm just now trying to find system requirements for VS6 on Microsoft's site but apparently they are only interested in talking about .NET there. Ground Zero Tech-Works http://www.ayanova.com

        > I think ME isn't that a bad choice. Sounds like something from a grammatically incorrect self-affirmation book. "Because I'm good enough, I'm nice enough, and gosh darn it, people just like me!" :) Nick

No, you should be able to install Windows 2000 on any new notebook. Check the hardware that it comes with and check the vendors web site for 2000 drivers, or check the HCL for support.

I suppose there's no reason not to try since most of the notebooks I've been looking at come with a quick restore CD that will bring them back to pristine condition so it's worth a try. Ground Zero Tech-Works http://www.ayanova.com

I use it every day, and although ME is WAY slow on a 300 MHz machine overclocked to 450, VS works fine for me. Christian The content of this post is not necessarily the opinion of my yadda yadda yadda. To understand recursion, we must first understand recursion.

I'm sorry, my primairy language is not English. It's all I've learned from television, can't help it. -- Alex Marbus

If ME is slow, I think Win2k would me much slower. Maybe ME isn't the problem, but the fact the machine is overclocked? I've seen a lot of overclocked machines which work slower then they did on their original speed. -- Alex Marbus

I apologize. My intent was not to make fun of your English. God knows I butcher French, the only other language I have any proficiency in. The only Dutch I know is a rude phrase or two that I leared from an exchange student. I just have this habit of making stupid jokes/puns at every opportunity. "I think ME isn't that a bad choice." ==> "I think I am not that bad a choice" ==> self-affirmation [collective groan] So, no offense was intended. Sorry again. Nick

:( Very bad combo. Windows ME, imho, is a complete joke. I strongly don't recommend even using it solo on a laptop; it's caused enough problems with the sales reps that have it they begged us to take it off and put Win98 on. Using Win95 or 98 is also not a good idea, since debugging more than a few times will cause a memory problem with the OS and bomb it. Personally, I use Windows2000 on my laptop with VS6 and all the other goodies loaded. Does a most excellet job, and never had a single problem. Just make sure that the laptop you're getting supports W2k.

AAahh, now I get it :) I wasn't mad or anything, I just wanted to excuse myself for any mistakes I've made. Now I understand it, I think it's a good joke :-O -- Alex Marbus

I am using Windows ME and VS6 on my computer. I receive no memory problems or anything else for that matter on my computer. Hope you have success on whatever you buy. :)
