Learning a new language (French)
-
We are using a program for learning at home together. I was looking for audio I can use as well. Can't really do passive listening on a dictionary.

I recently starting doing French lessons with my daughter. I wanted a french to english sort of passive listening, but I can't find any that I like. I can find all french, but that's not what I'm looking for. I'd like to find some audio learning type of thing that says words/phrases in one language and then the other. Anyone know of anything like this?

Have a look at EuroTalk Interactive[^] - I have tried one of them many years ago, and IIRC it worked.

Ah, the original 'yo momma' joke

How is this to be understood ? Have you forgotten the language after that ?

It was about 15 years or so ago - and so I can't remember how much of it I remember from them, and how much from using it!

Watch kids TV programs. (Online probably). With a bit of learning, the context and simple stories they provide will make it easier, but, let me say that what you are doing is difficult, French pronunciation is very difficult for English speakers, and while doing it this way might teach you how to understand it, it wont tech you how to pronounce it, or how the language is structured, for these you need to be in France, and learn it from a book. So, what I found good was the Hugo 'learn French in three months' and it did. I learnt all the grammar and a good vocab in that time. I then lived in France for 10 years, and was OK at French, but it was only co sharing with a load of French guys in Lux on one contract that I got to really understand it properly and speak it to the point I was mistaken for a native French speaker on a number of occasions, which for a late learner shows it can be done. Of course, 6 French mates cant be ordered up on demand, but if there is a French society near by you join that would go a long way. And it is the most beautiful language, and a very interesting language too. And also learning it will allow yo to read Italian and Spanish to a large degree.
