So, still got a bit of jet lag and was up at 0400, wide awake, even though I didn't go to bed till about 2345. What, I thought, should I do? So I made some tea and toast and proceeded to watch the 2nd pilot for Star Trek. It was actually pretty good other than Spock just shouting all of his lines. What I did notice, for the first time, was that Kirk's tombstone read James R Kirk, not James T. I'm sure I've watched that episode multiple times and never spotted that before. Still the best of all the ST series. My favorite episode is "Tomorrow is Yesterday".

It was ground breaking, but the stories were a little...simple. And the ending was kinda predictable. But I still loved it, and indeed do. But favorite? I'm not sure. Better than Next Gen, better than Enterprise. But DS9 when it was working well? I don't think so - DS9 gave a better sense of "depth", of a "real" galaxy and with story arcs that continued across whole series it was better in some ways. Of course, it also had Quark...and no Uhura... But Voyager was good as well - once they dumped Kes (and they should have dropped Nelix in a black hole, annoying worm that he was). So I can't say the original was best - but the remake of the original is shaping up well from the two movies so far!

Now you have done it. I'm going to grab a random DVD and see which episodes I am going to watch tonight. Edit: Just one episode from season 2 on this DVD: The Trouble With Tribbles :-)

I've had it for a few years but you can get it here: Star Trek: The Complete Original Series (Seasons 1-3) [Blu-ray] (1966)[^]

Yes, really rather good. They are, of course, predictable nonsense but really good fun. It did take me a good few years to realize that Star Trek probably wasn't a documentary.

Not least because that's when a certain crew-member[^] joined. :-D If you've got access to the annoyingly-named "SyFy" channel, they're showing TNG, DS9 and Voyager every weeknight.

Yes, that was a good episode. I also liked any episode with the Borg or Q.

I find it odd that the Borg just kinda went away with no explanation.

Weren't they effectively destroyed in the final episode of Voyager when Janeway from the future enabled earlier Janeway to blow up the trans warp conduits?

I do not recall that. I do need to re-watch Voyager, but I'm doing Mission Impossible now.
