As the great DNA said "I love deadlines. I like the whooshing sound they make as they fly by"
Those who fail to learn history are doomed to repeat it. --- George Santayana (December 16, 1863 – September 26, 1952) Those who fail to clear history are doomed to explain it. --- OriginalGriff (February 24, 1959 – ∞)

I like deadlines. They help you to focus on what's needed to complete a product/phase/whatever, rather than anything else. The problems isn't the deadlines, it's the focusing on other stuff.
I wanna be a eunuchs developer! Pass me a bread knife!

At my first job there was an expression... You have to shoot the engineers to finish the code. Everyone thinks they have a great feature to add, it'll only take 5 minutes. Even PMs and Business Owners think the same. Reality is, if it isn't a critical requirement... leave it alone! Come back if there is time (rarely). Otherwise, it is a billable item in phase 2. We do want to make money, right? It'll only take 5 [minutes|hours|etc]... and 4 months later it is part of the QA process, still causing bugs that delay the release, and everyone forgets it was not even a critical part of the system.
