Schlaubi wrote: The same is with news. Why are there currently only reports about Iraq, America, NATO, ... on TV? Because it's the main topic everywhere. People need more information every day to keep conversation alive, and the news provide that new information Ahh, well there you go. News channels provide it. Which is why I think we are being driven by the media rather than the media being driven by us. They push to us, there is very little way we can push back. You say we can switch news channels. True. But what is showing on the other news channel? Also Iraq. Also dogs on ice (and nothing to do with the Ice Shows.) Throw the TV out, get a paper. Damn, more Iraq. Buy another paper, Dog Rescued From Ice While Bush Invades Iraq. Quite frankly most people I know are quite sick and tired of hearing about and talking about Iraq. Here on CP we have seen it, people asking for War Talk to be in the Soapbox or preferrably not at all. Yet the media still pumps it out. The feedback loop is not working.

Paul Watson wrote: Which is why I think we are being driven by the media rather than the media being driven by us. They push to us, there is very little way we can push back. I think it's kind of circle. It's sure that media invents the news which then become a public topic. Once the news is established, people demand for new information as long as they're interested in, and thus watch the news channel or buy the papers. So media is pushed to update it's information day for day. Once people's interest declines, media invents another news to be topic number one. So we influence media, too. But not in the way that we tell them what to show / write, but how long to keep news up-to-date or which of the news to keep in program. And that's what you denied when posting "I don't think the main news is really in touch with peoples interests any more.". But beside that all I agree that mainly we're driven by media. They 'help' to build our opinion, thus having influence on our whole life.

Indeed, very true. But I would wager my left nut that if the same air crash happened in America that every news agency would break the bank getting to it and reporting on it all day every day for at least 2 weeks. And the thing is, all our news channels would be plastered with it as well because we get our stuff mainly from America (Retuers, Associated Press etc.) Not saying it is Americas fault. Hell no, it is the rest of the worlds fault. We depend far too much on America. This whole Iraq issue has brought up that dependency in my eyes. Made us aware that we might as well be states in the United States of Earth, with GWB as our Overlord.

302 elite troops dead[^] in crash. Now I know this topic has been beaten to death but: I only happened to hear about this tragedy by visiting Google news. It is like a sub-sub-sub-sub link on CNN.com. BBC, second item so go BBC. But come on peeps. Just for one second think how farked into a frenzied cocked hat the media would be if that Iranian plane was American and had US troops in it. I would have woken up with "Air Disaster" taped to my forehead and the CNN anchor in my bedroom. In general I would say things are disproportinatley FUBAR in our world.

It may also be a factor which country it happened in. Iran isn't the most open country in the world, especially to a free press corps. What gets my goat is that if it happened in America, there would be a Muslim cleric in Iran saying God did it because we're the great satan.

Pretty much the same here, but this time specifically international news - I wonder if the little old ladies being beaten up over here for their pensions and loaves of bread would interest them - seems doubtful, for the same reason you state :( Oh well, I work in the wrong city for news anyway (I'm having trouble deciding whether Maidstone or Nelspruit is larger). Personally I prefer iafrica to News24 (they did feature the Iran plane crash this morning), and have had an article on London published by them once, but to be honest, I find writing blurb to go with my shots tedious in comparison with the fun I have taking the shots themselves. Guess I should grow up huh? :-O

Actually, it was a front page link on msn.com when I looked yesterday. A sad event for any country to experience, friendly or not to the US. It is no less a tragedy for their family and friends than it would be here... The article had few details - any word yet on what happened? It is ok for women not to like sports, so long as they nod in the right places and bring beers at the right times.

Still, not greatly in bold font, huge letters, wailing and gnashing of teeth or anything. On a funnier topic (and anyone in the US please tell me if this is true or not!) our morning news program stated yesterday that the US was brought to a standstill yesterday (yes, even the impending war was kicked from the news screens apparently) as all channels switched over to the live rescue of a dog floating about on a piece of ice off NYC  Don't get me wrong, I love dogs, but what kind of crazy coverage is that!

If either is the case it's good news worth to be shown the whole day, week, ... When some thousand people die in a gale in Asia or South America we hear about that 1 time. But if a famous person dies in a car accident it's shown on every channel including lots of background knowledge. I think it's a bad situation, but the news mainly show what the people are interested in - and that's nearly nothing that doesn't affect them.

It'd be refreshing though to see a channel who brought a nice balance of tragedy and triumph, and paid no attention to what nation it was, andreported political goings on with little bias. Unfortunately in most cases your scenario fits. :( But we in Germany have one news-'show' that doesn't use optical means to catch viewers. It's broadcasted every day at 8pm, lasts only 15 minutes and has one of the highest ratings of the day. And that's an exception. All the other new shows bank on the stuff you mentioned. That's bad, because it's more show than news. brianwelsch wrote: It'd be refreshing though to see a channel who brought a nice balance of tragedy and triumph, and paid no attention to what nation it was, andreported political goings on with little bias. That'd be really nice, but in the nearer future there'll ever be differences between what nation the news belongs to.
