I am going to go and wander through District Six this weekend, just to get some street photography under my belt. Can you believe that? Me, middle class white collar worker wandering through District Six because he wants photos... shudder the thought! I even enquired the other day as to how much the Township Tours cost so that I could get some squatter camp shots. Not too mention the bloody shins, bruised elbows, dinged head and scrabed knees from clambering into the wierdest spots just to get the right angle on mountains, beaches, rocks and caterpillars. :-D What a wonderful drug.

My point is that if the accident had been American then I, living in South Africa, would have heard about it all day everyday for two weeks solid with a CNN anchor in my bedroom almost. But because it was Iranian, it got mild coverage and quickly sank. That is FUBAR. The FUBAR bit is that we rely on the American news agencies (and American driven news agencies like Reuters) too much. They obviously report on American topics, and they should, they are American, let them. But then we, Other Countries, should have our own network so that we can get the news relevant to us. We are pathetic for not having it and are suffering under our American-bias.

Seriously I think any news agency must think about how much they can milk a story for. American advertisers generally target americans with money. So most of the bandwidth in the world goes to what will be interesting to that group. Imagine a story "Identical Twin child stuck down a hole". The shots of the above ground twin would be worth a fortune, and quite inexpensive to procure compared to covering an Iranian air disaster. It might seem sad it might seem callous but that's life. Sept 11 had spectacular coverage because of its location and simbolism. But who cared when Tikiopia dissapeared ? Regardz Colin J Davies
