Well, the agony continues. After rebuilding our entire network, and finally getting the new Exchange to accept the new domain's accounts as left over from the old domain (yes - it was a TOTAL network rebuild), our crappy backup software still refuses to restore 3 mailboxes. Of course, just to toy with me further, one of those mailboxes belongs to the CEO's PA, and holds all the firms contacts. Why, you ask sensibly, did we store everything on the server, not the local machines? Simple - we thought it would be prudent to back them up each night, along with the other backups. Now to anyone else who has ever used X| Arcserve  X| this story might sound familiar. To the rest of the world I probably sound completely unreasonable. Even the tech support guys (£100 per phone call incident) at Computer Associates are unable to fathom the reason behind the problem - and to make things worse, each of the 3 have completely different errors. Now please don't get the idea from this post that I am employed as anything other than a developer (although I haven't seen Visual Studio for over a week now), but as my poor boss has been totally worn out by the passed 10 days events I am trying to get it up and running (noooooooo, I am not a network / backup guru :( ). To further complicate matters, the SP's installed on Arcserve at the Tech Supports insistance have lead to a break down of our normal backups, which only partially ran last night  :(( :(( Anyway, thanks for listening to me rant. Back to the server room I go.... :(( [edit] Wow, what a colourful thread I have created :-O [/edit]

I sympahise, but I do get a sense of Deja Vu, been, there done it. I always try and convice people that a backup is only as good as the recovery, and you SHOULD test the recovery every month or so. But there is only 1 guaranteed method, which I have fallen back on, get hard copies of all important data, then at least they can be typed in. As some light relief at one compnay I worked at one department insisted on doing their own backups, their tapes were kept on a shelf near a piece of metal, used as a book end, it was magnetic!! Fortunately we had a good back for them to use.

I feel your pain...:(( I fought to make Exchange 5.5 work for years, and finally had to give up when my position in the company was reorganized into non-existence. ARCServe I haven't tried, but it doesn't surprise me that it fals you when you need it to do what you paid for - most products seem to do that these days. If it would help, I'd be happy to read aloud the entire contents of the several books I have on Exchange into a file and email it to you... It is ok for women not to like sports, so long as they nod in the right places and bring beers at the right times.

I am very surprised at the popularity of exchange though. Why not QMail or SendMail? My article on a reference-counted smart pointer that supports polymorphic objects and raw pointers
