In looking at the bracket, I can see how each of the four regions (south, east, west, midwest) pares down its 16 teams to 1, and then the Final Four begins. But I don't understand the First Four (games). Two games played last night and two will play tonight. Why weren't those 8 teams part of the other regions? What becomes of the winners of those games?

Wichita State went into the South 16, and Florida Gulf coast went into the East 16. Tonight's winners will also make it into one of the regional 16.

Will they go to those regions as a bye, or who would they be paired up with (since it is a single elimination tourney)?

There were open slots in the real bracket for them. The whole thing is a stupid money grab.

Fair enough. It's easier to draw it that way than some convoluted picture with the extra lines sticking out into nowhere.

So then why not have four regions of 18 instead?

18 / 2 = 9...you'd have to work in bye's after the first round. It would be a mess.
