Congratulations. You have discovered one of the fundamental flaws in democracy. The people are the last .. er .. people you'd want making decisions about anything! Just to really make you scared that's something that Plato told us around 2500 years ago!

    I am not a number. I am a ... no, wait!

Which is why we are lucky in Britain to have Murdoch to tell us how we should vote. "It's The Sun wot won it"

I am a senior in high school. About a week ago I went up to the school's library to work on an app I was doing. A few minutes later, another senior class came in. Their teacher wished for them to take an online quiz which would tell them where they were on the political spectrum. Now mind you, these people are 17 - 18 and will be able to vote this November. During their quiz, I became a little scared about the future. These people had know idea what the terms "pro-life" and "pro-choice" were. They did not have any idea what Planned Parenthood was, and could not make sense of questions about taxation. One question asked: "Do you believe that U.S. senators should have a set term limit", and a student told the teacher he did not understand the question. I do believe one of the few questions they did understand asked about the legalization of marijuana. It is not even the fact that they were so ignorant about these issues. I'm am worried because the were sitting right in front of a computer and did not bother to look any of it up. :omg:

The irony is killing me. I agree with your overall point though, only those that agree with my views should be allowed to vote.

Yes - there are fascists at any extreme of the political spectrum; they just wear different clothes.

You have reason to worry, James. Democracy is a political tool that ensures we are governed no better than we deserve! :^)

It's ok. The electorate has always been dumb and uninformed. This is also what allows them to be manipulated easily, this was already used extensively by the Romans. And then you're back to de-facto oligarchy anyway, no harm done.

Well, the good news is that if they're that uninterested in political considerations, they're not terribly likely to vote. This is a good thing. The bad news is that there are passionate, invested individuals out there that will not only vote, but will attempt to shame the people that aren't interested into voting "their way". It happens every cycle, and it never ends well. And the worst news is that this year, it looks like people will get to choose between an almost comical caricature or an unrepentant criminal. Oh wait, that's every election year.

Raise the age to vote to 25. Or perhaps a minimum GPA? :-\

And this is the reason we have the "electoral college" - common folk weren't considered to be smart/educated/informed enough to cast a vote.

If you have an important point to make, don't try to be subtle or clever. Use a pile driver. Hit the point once. Then come back and hit it again. Then hit it a third time - a tremendous whack. --Winston Churchill

:omg:
