I'm reading 'Stupid White Men' at the moment, and I must say that it's alternating between disturbing, and disturbingly obvious propoganda. Anyhow, he claims that black people are still widely discriminated against in the US, and cites employment as one area where the discrimination is widespread. Do people in the US agree ? Are the only dark skinned folks in your office the ones who empty the bins ? That's what Moore claims, and as I am fast deciding he needs to be taken with a grain of salt, I'd like some US opinions. I don't know why your post is rated only a 2, I rated it 5. As far as I can see, racism in America is fairly minimal. I mean, the situation could be better but it is a damn sight better than it was 20 or 30 years ago. I think most racism today comes from people that grew up before the 80s. Its a lie to say racism or discrimination does not exist in America, but its not as bad as it used to be. I do think its more of a problem among older people and in more rural areas of the south and some civil war border states. I still hear comments now and then where I grew up, about "darkies", "blacks", and an occasional "nigger", and it makes me cringe everytime I hear it. But those comments are usually coming from the older generations and the rednecks.

Make of this what you will; When I first visited London I was amazed to see white bus drivers, white beggars, white street cleaners, white janitors and white subway cleaners. I was even pretty amazed to see white Burger King attendants. You just don't see that here (here being South Africa.)

From outside the US I can see its not simple. Colin Powell was once asked if he had faced discrimination in the army and he hadn't. I've know someone who spent half her childhood in the US who did. In short, I doubt if individual responses can give us a clear answer, but hopefully things are continuing to improve (everywhere, not just the US). Elaine :rose: The tigress is here :-D

There was a british comedy show years ago with a sketch about people and colour. An indian woman (I think it was Meera Syal) made the following observation: You get browned off You get the blues You have a yellow streak You get green around the gills You suffer from black moods (depression) You go white with shock You're in the pink And you call us coloured ! :laugh: Elaine :rose: The tigress is here :-D

I recall the turmoil of the racial equality movement, but with the memory of a child. While growing up in a white suburb of LA in California I never saw blacks (other than on television) until I was a teenager. Looking back I can see that there was little opportunity for them above menial jobs then, but in my working life I've never seen any form of discrimination against them. I have seen many claimed abuses, but each case was a complete fabrication by the claimant, and many attempted to gain unearned favor by threatening to claim discrimination. Today, instead of being surrounded by politically correct, sensitive California Liberals, I'm in a community of redneck assholes, and I see no evidence whatsoever of any kind of prejudice even here. Black folks are welcomed in public places, hold jobs equal to any white citizen, and are argued with, called names, and invited outside to fight or engage in a spitting contest just like white folks. The rednecks have even been known to help a black neighbor take the wheels off his new house more than once in recent memory. Michael Moore is a complete imbecile, and always has been, and the louder he pontificates, the less he knows about any given subject. In this country blacks will use the term, along with whites who are insecure about what to call them. There have been so many politically correct terms for people of color in this country in the past 4 decades... I think (but can't prove) that the term black folks is a subconcious way to avoid calling them people left over from the bad old days. There are many whites who feel uncertain of how to behave around blacks, but these days I see it more as an excessive effort to avoid offense than as a derogatory act. I've worked in Detroit for a while. There was so much racism there. It was amazing how the people there hate. I've not encountered racism like that here. The stereotype for Alabama was earned decades ago. I think it's fallen away. Especially just in my 27 years. Things have changed since I was a kid. nay

Okay, I'm a little late. Like everyone else has said, racism still exists, and things are a lot better than they used to be. Right now in the US there is a certain degree of being extra conscious about racism. Just a few months ago Trent Lott stepped down as speaker of the Senate for saying that the US should've elected Strom Thurmond when he ran for president in 1948 (Thurmond ran on a segregationist ticket). That story cuts both ways - first that Lott would say such a thing (bad) - and second that he would generate such controversy that he stepped down as speaker of the Senate (good). But, I guess that doesn't quite answer the question about the jobs that black people can get in the US. Other than the obvious examples of Colin Powell and Condoleezza Rice, the mayor of Denver Link[^] for the past 12 years is black. Also, Denver isn't a very black city (65.30% White, 11.12% African American), which means he got a lot of white votes, hence race wasn't a big factor in the elections. I had read somewhere that more blacks in the US are classified as 'middle-class' than 'lower-class'. As for my office, there are no black people at all. At my old job, I worked with a black girl who was a tester, but software doesn't seem to be a common field for blacks to go into. ------------------------------------------ "What happened in that Rhode Island club is shocking.
